Job Summary

The Department of Journalism in the College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a Scholar in Residence. This is a non-tenure-track faculty position starting in August 2019 with an initial contract period of two years. 

The Scholar in Residence will teach courses in the Department of Journalism- two courses during one semester of the academic year and three in the other semester. This is a reduction in the typical 3/3 teaching load for Scholars in Residence. In particular, the Scholar in Residence will support the teaching mission of the Center for Environmental Journalism. This will include teaching courses required of students enrolled in the environmental emphasis of the Department of Journalism’s master’s program; and advising and mentoring environmental emphasis students. In addition, the Scholar in Residence will work with the Director of the Center for Environmental Journalism to extend environmental journalism offerings to undergraduate students, including helping to develop and teach new courses, and advising and mentoring undergraduates. 

The Scholar in Residence also will assist the CEJ director in administering the center’s programs, including the Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism; and will help organize, and participate in CEJ activities including seminars, field trips, and events. In addition, the Scholar in Residence will provide service to the Department of Journalism, such as serving on committees and attending regular department faculty meetings. 

Who We Are

The College of Media Communication and Information, established in 2015, is the first new college on the CU-Boulder campus in 53 years. CMCI is designed for collaborations among faculty and students in the departments of Journalism; Information Science; Media Studies; Communication; Advertising, Public Relations and Media Design; and related fields. The Journalism program, nationally accredited since 1948, offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. In addition to operating CU News Corps, it is home to NewsTeam Boulder (a local student news broadcast), the web-based CU Science Update, the internationally acclaimed Center for Environmental Journalism, Buff Sports Live (a weekly sports broadcast), and numerous other journalism projects.  The department offers certificate programs in International Media and Sports Journalism. What We Can Offer

The estimated salary for range of $63,000-$71,000 is negotiable and nationally competitive.

A moving allowance will also be available.

What We Require

  • Master’s Degree required
  • Minimum of seven years of journalism experience
  • Expertise in environmental journalism
  • Experience with long-form journalism
  • Familiarity with or demonstrated appreciation for professional journalism academic fellowship programs
  • Teaching experience at the college level or experience working with college students in internships or other professional settings
