Job Summary

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is encouraging applications for people with spacecraft and instrument testing and operations experience to support the development and operations of NASA and private space missions ranging from small cubesats to large decade-long projects. Project scientific goals span Astrophysics to Planetary to Solar to Earth Atmospheric and Climate missions. Every day our team strives to bring creative and innovative ideas to solve challenging problems. As a member of our team, you will apply your unique abilities to the development of ground systems to support the integration and test of components prior to launch and continue on through flight operations and end-of-mission activities. Your contribution will be essential to the success of our missions and will support the science community in furthering our understanding of the universe around us.

Our team collaborates with scientists, data processing specialists, engineers, students, and other colleagues and partners. We are looking for applicants that connect and communicate well with mixed teams of students, scientists, and engineers, and also external customers such as the science community and NASA personnel. Applicants need to be able to learn quickly and balance competing priorities. On-the-job training is provided and mentoring/support is an important component of our organization.

Who We Are

LASP is a world-renowned space science research institute at the University of Colorado Boulder. LASP is one of the top space science research institutes in the country employing approximately 500 scientists, engineers, support personnel, and students. The University of Colorado receives more NASA funding than any public university in the country, due in large part to LASP programs. Professional engineers work closely with scientists and assembly technicians in designing and building space flight hardware while helping mentor students as entry-level engineers working on these programs. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Assist with the integration and functional test of the flight and ground segments of the mission.
  • Develop and perform tests to validate flight hardware and software requirements.
  • Develop and maintain procedures and scripts for testing and flight operations.
  • Generate command sequences for uplink to a satellite or instrument.
  • Conduct real time spacecraft/satellite/instrument flight operations.
  • Perform routine trend analysis on spacecraft and instrument telemetry.
  • Troubleshoot and investigate flight and ground system anomalies.
  • Support on-call operations during off-hours (nights, holidays, and weekends) as needed.
  • Train, certify and mentor student Command Controllers.

What You Should Know

  • Occasional travel may be necessary to support remote instrument/project activities.
  • Candidates are required to live within 1-hour drive time of our facility. This position is eligible to have some relocation expenses covered for qualifying candidates.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this full-time position is $80,000-90,000.

We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 200% matching for the first 5% contributed with immediate vesting.  Relocation assistance is available per institute guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, computer science, a physical science, or related field.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to work well within a team environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Establish and maintain good interpersonal and intergroup relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Ability to perform basic programming tasks such as writing scripts, shell scripting.
  • Knowledge of spacecraft operations.
  • Knowledge of UNIX/LINUX.
  • An understanding of software coding practices.
  • Familiarity with Atlassian tools.
  • 1-3 years of experience in spacecraft/space instrument engineering or operations.
