Job Summary

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is looking for an experienced and qualified Spacecraft Systems Engineer to join the spacecraft systems engineering team for development of a deep space mission that will fly by Venus and explore the asteroid belt. Launch is expected in early 2028.

The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is a University of Colorado space research lab at the Boulder campus. As an Institute of CU-Boulder, LASP is at the international forefront of space science research in solar, planetary, atmospheric and space plasma physics.

LASP’s record of excellence in space instrument and spacecraft construction, mission operations, and science data analysis for Earth, planetary, and deep space missions is supported by organizational expertise in space-flight electronics, mechanisms, detectors, and optics across a wide spectral range, including sensors for energetic particle, dust, electric field, and magnetic field measurements. The systems engineering division at LASP has broad experience in defining space systems and can provide mentoring in many different aspects of space mission design

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

You will be a part of the spacecraft systems engineering development effort including design, requirements/verification, component and system interface identification, system level analysis, ConOpos development, lander design, design reviews, and integration and test support for an upcoming deep space mission as part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists. Team member will also be responsible for growing and deploying new systems engineering techniques at the Lab.

Applicant should be experienced with spacecraft design and systems operating concepts. Specific skills include:

  • Understanding of spacecraft design including architecture-level knowledge of all spacecraft subsystems
  • Familiarity with requirements management systems
  • Development of system level resource budgets
  • Experience working in a space system integration and test environment
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and fluid team environment
  • Ability to think outside the box
  • Willingness to mentor and collaborate with international partners
  • Ability to clearly communicate both big-picture and detailed technical concepts
  • Capable of fully owning a task and leading an effort to completion

Job Duties:

  • Participate in communicating and capturing documentation on the design, analysis, and specifications for the MAX mission.
  • Specfiications will include definition of detailed physical, electrical, thermal, and software interfaces. Understanding these interfaes to ensure proper compatability between components and subsystem implementation.
  • Participate as a systems engineer in the overall development of the spacecraft, providing feedback, review, and insight to other subsystems and to the flight segment.
  • Review detailed subsystem drawings, specifications, and schematics to ensure they meet the desired requirements without applying unwanted constraints on the mission.
  • Work with other systems engineers and subsystem leads to develop create operational scenarios, scope resource budgets, and architect system-level tests to ensure the flight system operates as a integrated spacecraft.
  • Develop new methods to communicate, and make available, the different resource budgets for use in subsystem analysis.
  • Understand how spacecraft system level decisions will impact payloads and work with the payload systems engineer to determine how scientific product could be impacted.
  • Work with subsystems to develop and manage requirements that detail what the subsystem needs to do to achieve the mission objectives. Review links between higher level requirements and ensure proper traceability. Develop specification requirements to flow to component vendors.
  • Mentor junior engineers at LASP and within our customer organization.

Specific tasks include:

  • Write requirements and verification plans.
  • Write verification matrices for level 3 requirements and level 4 where needed.
  • Detail the spacecraft level ConOps in modern diagramming languages.
  • Participate and help plan peer reviews and programmatic reviews.
  • Review and approve detailed drawings and documents for manufacture.
  • Scope and create tests to validate the functional performance at the system level.
  • Run system level tests through simulations for robustness testing.
  • Participate in system level scenario creation and testing.
  • Review test results to determine successful execution and desired result of a test.
  • Aid the anomaly management and resolution process during build, integration, and test.

What You Should Know

  • Travel: International travel required for milestone reviews, TIMs, or final testing/delivery (estimated two trips per year, maximum).
  • Due to US Export Control restrictions, only US Citizens and Permanent Residents may apply.
