Job Summary
The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is looking for a qualified Electrical Systems Engineer to lead the end-to-end electrical design of a deep space mission that will spend seven years touring the inner solar system and explore the main asteroid belt. Launch is expected in early 2028.
Who We Are
LASP at the University of Colorado Boulder is one of the largest research institutes at the University of Colorado Boulder. With a focus on solar, stellar, space plasma, atmospheric and planetary sciences, LASP employs both experimental and theoretical approaches to answer key science questions. Since its inception in 1948, LASP has developed, operated, and analyzed the data from scientific instrumentation for solar science, Earth atmospheric, planetary, deep-space, and Earth-orbiting spacecraft missions investigating the Sun, all eight planets, Pluto, and beyond. The progressive development of research capabilities and the use of innovative technologies in pursuit of emerging research initiatives ensures a continued leadership role for LASP in today’s growing “new space” era.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
You will oversee the vehicle electrical design and performance. The Electrical Systems Lead is tasked with ensuring payload and subsystem electrical architectures and designs are compatible and will meet mission requirements. You will be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists working to complete a challenging and exciting deep space mission.
Applicant should be experienced with space missions and have a good understanding of the different types of components on a spacecraft. Applicant must have a solid understanding of fundamental electrical engineering topics, such as grounding, EMI, EMC, and electrical compatibility. Previous experience with solar electric propulsion is desired. Must be able to work in a dynamic and fluid team environment.
Job Duties:
- Ensure the electrical system works end-to-end and help make the mission successful.
- Provide technical oversight of detailed designs to ensure the electrical system is compliant and verifiable at the payload and spacecraft level.
- Oversee spacecraft and instrument/payload level grounding, EMI/EMC/ESD allocations and implementation, and electrical interface definitions.
- Define and oversee the test and verification program for electrical components on the vehicle.
- Establish and maintain spacecraft electrical configurations and interfaces across the vehicle.
- Lead and perform technical analyses of complex system problems and develop solutions to those problems.
- Lead the resolution of avionics and electrical anomalies and determine root cause and corrective action.
- Manage electrical performance and integration, compatibility analysis, and electrical subsystem designs to ensure compliance with the spacecraft level technical baseline.
- Manage end-to-end compatibility, functional allocations, and margins.
- Effectively operate within a multi-discipline systems engineering team.

- Travel: Domestic travel required to visit subcontractors, etc. International travel required for milestone reviews, TIMs, final testing, or launch site activities (estimated two trips per year, maximum).

What We Require
- At least 10 years spacecraft electrical systems or design experience.
- BS/BA or higher-level degree in engineering or applied sciences.
- Experience as a technical team leader.
- Knowledge of grounding architectures for spacecraft and low noise systems.
- Knowledge of harnessing to meet voltage drop, power, and signal integrity requirements.
- Experience developing single string and redundant electrical systems.
- Experience in developing or guiding the creation of electrical system specifications and electrical requirements analyses and allocations.
- Experience with higher voltage (50-700V) electrical buses for solar electric propulsion and the ability to analyze impacts and effects on the spacecraft electical system.
- Detailed design experience with space flight qualified electronics.
- Analytical experience, such as FMECA, WCA, reliability, EMI/EMC/ESD, voltage drop, and derating.
- Expertise in high-speed digital system architectures, closed-loop control systems, and integration and test experience.
