Job Summary

We invite applications for a postdoctoral research associate position at the Department of Geography, University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder), who will primarily work on a newly funded project aiming to develop advanced computational methods and scientific approaches to extract historical geographic information from digital archived maps originally published between 1884 and 2006. The postdoc is expected to collaborate in developing these computational methods, design evaluation processes and demonstrate how these historical geographical data can be used in scientific studies to advance knowledge of how humans interact with their environment over long time periods.

The position can start as early as February 2025 or as soon as possible. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on satisfactory performance and fund availability.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

We train our students – in a friendly, well-supported environment – to be top scientists as well as citizens of the broader world to which we're all connected.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  1. Collaborate on machine learning based information extraction, develop evaluation processes and perform uncertainty analysis to apply historical spatio-temporal data in case studies that model changes in human-environment interactions over long time periods.
  2. Develop manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings;
  3. Present and communicate the findings to the communities of researchers and stakeholders;
  4. Assist and develop new grant proposals on related topics for submission to funding agencies;
  5. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

What You Should Know

The position will offer a unique postdoctoral training experience. The postdoc will be part of an interdisciplinary team from multiple institutions. The postdoc will be encouraged to publish extensively, develop advanced technical skills, strengthen their research portfolios, and gain expertise in authoring grant proposals.
