Job Summary

Learning Spaces Technology (LST) within the Office of Information Technology encourages applications for an AV System Engineer! This role is responsible for service and commissioning of a variety of Audio Visual (AV) systems, networks and equipment. This position is a domain expert (SME) in the areas of AV system configuration, programming, installation, troubleshooting, testing, and standard processes. The AV System Engineer will coordinate technical, architectural, and construction requirements and changes with LST Project Managers, Design Engineers and Integrators. Applying system drawings, specifications and technical references, the AV System Engineer will test and fix system components, equipment, and functionality. In addition, will perform field verification of connections, labels, installation, work quality, as well as ensure accurate and complete project punch-lists are created and communicated to the LST Support Manager for project closeouts. The AV System Engineer is responsible for ensuring the AV design has been followed through the entire project and performing system commissioning to ensure that these systems are ready for client use.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

AV Engineering and System Commissioning:
  • Provide field engineering support to the project team using combined abilities of engineering, equipment configuration, programming, troubleshooting and documentation.
  • Contribute on projects from initial estimating phase through final inspections. 
  • Review schematic designs within a range of tools and applications. 
  • Assist the LST Support Manager with handling client requested changes to project scope.
  • Senior installation authority for sophisticated, high priority, and/or large projects.
  • Assist installation team with rack build, commissioning and AV install when necessary.
  • Field installation and programming of AV systems: control programs, firmware, digital signal processing(DSP) programming, and device network setup.
  • Act as a point of escalation in the field for installation, configuration, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of AV systems and equipment.
  • Evaluate functionality and code for audio visual control systems and equipment.
  • Validate graphical interfaces for touch panels usage.
  • Fix and diagnose control programming and equipment problems. Gather and analyze system logs and system settings for video codecs, control systems, DSP mixers, video switchers as necessary to support the testing and troubleshooting of these devices.
  • Responsible for identifying defective or failed equipment and working with suppliers or manufacturers to obtain a resolution.
  • Perform remote troubleshooting/monitoring as an advanced support.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance, managed services, and upgrades of customer’s systems not managed by LST.
Quality Assurance and Project Documentation:
  • Commission AV systems by testing systems post install and verifying quality standards are being achieved.
  • Ensure accurate document markups are produced and turned into the LST Support Manager in a timely manner.
  • Take ownership to accurately complete project documentation as needed.
  • Review material lists and checklists for proper installation and any vital changes.
  • Assist with project closeout and take the appropriate steps and measures to assure final acceptance by the customer.
  • Responsible for documentation and proper setup of IP configuration of all AV devices residing on a network and storing these on the project server.
  • Responsible for managing software versions and storing final DSP code on the project server.
  • Provide system testing/commissioning documentation and prepare final punch lists as well as completion of punch list for project closeout.
  • Responsible for completing commissioning quality control(QC) checklists.
Continuous Improvement:
  • Participate in department efforts to drive process improvement, with primary emphasis on AV project quality, timely project execution and ensuring safe operations.
  • Proactively anticipate issues and risks to a project and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Demonstrate on-site job leadership and mentor fellow service technicians.
  • Provide necessary training and support for next level service technicians.

What You Should Know

  • Work modality is predominantly onsite due to the nature of the work. On occasion this position will be able to work with some flexibility and perform some work remotely based on the phase of projects worked on. The majority of system commissioning and AV troubleshooting occurs onsite.

  • Salary: $66,300 - $74,487.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (a combination of education and relevant experience as described below may be substituted for the degree on a year-by-year basis).
  • 3 years of AV system engineering and integration experience.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to upload and manipulate code for AV equipment: (Crestron/Extron/etc.) ; DSP (Biamp/QSC/BSS/ClearOne);
  • Intermediate knowledge of setting up audio and video conferencing systems including configuring and adjusting common audio equipment and video display systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of configuring wired or wireless TCP/IP networks.
  • Willing to learn and advance your skills and knowledge in the AV/IT engineering, design and programming subject areas.
  • The responsibilities listed above will require a knowledgeable, dynamic, resourceful, detailed and thoughtful individual to ensure that the systems, processes, and internal partners work in concert for the successful installation and support of AV systems on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. 
  • Must be competent with Windows-based software such as MS Office, Visio, Projects, D-Tools etc., and demonstrate senior Domain Expert level knowledge of AV systems and hardware.
  • Must have demonstrable skill in AV system troubleshooting and a proven track record to commission complex AV projects.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Avixa CTS (CTS-I or CTS-D is preferred).
  • Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Foundations certified
  • AQ/AV certification
  • Crestron and/or Biamp, Shure, or Extron Certification.
  • Experience in Commercial A/V and VTC Installations
  • Experience with commissioning AV control systems.
  • Experience loading and retrieving Crestron/Extron code.
  • Experience configuring & modifying DSP and audio systems.
