Job Summary

The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Accounting and Grant Professional. This individual is primarily responsible for handling pre-award and post-award activities for research projects and clinical services. This includes financial management and accounting support for faculty, staff, students, and research lab personnel in the Department. 

This position reviews, analyzes, and interprets the reports on expenditures for research grants and clinical services. This position also acts as personnel liaison for student assistants, leads purchasing and accounts payable/receivable functions, supports students, staff, and faculty regarding travel policies/procedures, and analyzes financial transactions and records. This position creates and recommends improvements in departmental processes to ensure compliance with fiscal regulations and policies for increased department efficiency and financial sustainability.

Located in breathtaking Boulder, Colorado, the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences offers a B.A. for undergraduate students, as well as a broad range of student training in clinical practice and research for graduate students. 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Pre-award Support 
  • Helps investigator/faculty to navigate administrative procedures and liaise with the Office of Contracts & Grants for the preparation and submission of grant and contract proposals.
  • Provides support during the budget development preparation process.
  • Monitors entries in InfoEd for new and existing award funding and notifies investigator/faculty about potential issues.
  • Works with individuals at all levels in the organization to ensure the successful integration of all grant application components and full compliance with University policies and funding agency requirements.
  • Partners with other campus offices as needed.
Post-award Administration
  • Provides accounting support and reconciliation of grants, donations, and gift funds, and ensures that spending is aligned with both University and sponsor policies.
  • Provides oversight on personnel expenses and duration of appointments.
  • Acts as personnel liaison for Research Assistants, Visiting Scholars, and Research Faculty appointments.
  • Partners with the Financial Service Center to ensure all documentation is provided and processed for purchases made using award funds.
  • Prepares and interprets monthly and on-demand financial reports and grant documents using University systems.
Administrative Support
  • Confirms purchasing requests and documentation submitted by staff and faculty meet department, university, state, and federal policies.
  • Manages the process of setting up and paying vendors, and settles whether payment is appropriate and within scope/budget of the project.
  • Analyzes and supports processing revenue received via clinic patients, clinical services, workshops, etc.
  • Verifies available funds for purchases, reviews invoices from vendors, and submits payment.
  • Manages the process of fiscal year-end accounting including independent monitoring of financial deadlines and coordinating multiple specific tasks.
Special Projects
  • Develop and improve financial and accounting processes by collaborating with other units to find standard methodologies to increase department efficiency.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, finance, human resources or a related field.
  • At least two years of dynamically responsible experience in accounting, financial management, business administration and/or human resources.
  • At least one year of experience with the application of internal accounting control principles, as well as generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Two or more years of experience in the coordination or administration of grants and contracts in an academic or medical school environment.
  • Knowledge of sponsored project processes and experience supporting research faculty.
  • Knowledge of administrative, budgetary, fiscal principles and practices in a higher education setting, including budgeting and fund accounting (general, auxiliary, gift, grant, etc.).
  • Experience with CU Boulder systems (HCM, PeopleSoft, CU Data, CU-SIS, DocuSign, Marketplace, InforEd, etc.).
  • Advanced skills in Excel for budget reporting and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and initiate, coordinate, and lead all aspects of various projects.
