The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a talented advanced level Electrical Engineer to join our team of developers, inventors, and explorers. LASP is a world-renowned research institute dedicated to the study of Earth’s atmosphere, the Sun, its planets, and beyond. In your position, you will be an electrical systems architect, planner, lead designer, and technology developer. Who We Are
LASP is a world-renowned space science research institute at the University of Colorado Boulder. LASP is one of the top space science research institutes in the country employing approximately 500 scientists, engineers, support personnel, and students. The University of Colorado receives more NASA funding than any public university in the country, due in large part to LASP programs. Professional engineers work closely with scientists and assembly technicians in designing and building space flight hardware while helping mentor students as entry-level engineers working on these programs. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Architect large electrical systems and subsystems (instruments or spacecraft).
- Define and manage complex production documentation and processes.
- Owns large aspects of an electronic design and is responsible for completing design, making part selections, performing requirements planning and verification, preparing required design analysis reports, and participates in all aspects of our peer review and project level review process.
- Collaborates with other engineering disciplines and project management as needed for projects/programs.
- Be a leader: Serve as the Lead EE on large projects and technically supervise junior engineers and undergraduate research assistants.
- Coordinates and engages other disciplines to solve technical challenges and represents electrical engineering needs in the solution space.
- Organizes and leads peer reviews or participates as a peer reviewer of electrical designs and related production documents.
- Supports proposal efforts in a lead role, and may manage small proposal efforts.
- Works with project management in generation and management of budgets and schedules, may be a cost account manager (CAM).
- Passionately mentors other engineers and students and contributes towards innovation by keeping abreast of industry state-of-the-art.
- Presents at project-level reviews and interfaces with our customers.
- Writes specifications for, and interacts with, vendors for components and subsystems.
- Ability to prepare statements of work and be technical manager for subcontracts.
- Interacts with customers and represents the electrical engineering organization.
What You Should Know
- Due to US Export Control restrictions, only US Citizens and Permanent Residents may apply.
- Senior electrical engineering staff are expected to nominally be on-site during core work hours at least 4 of the 5 working days.

What We Can Offer
- Salary range: $138,744.02 - $180,467.16. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 200% matching for the first 5% contributed with immediate vesting.
- Relocation expenses up to the equivalent of one-months’ salary (taxable).

What We Require
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and / or Electrical and Computer Engineering (other degrees will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis).
- At least 12 years of electrical engineering experience with proficiency in several of these disciplines:
- Spacecraft harnessing
- GSE (H/W and S/W)
- Embedded Design (H/W and S/W)
- Digital PWB design
- Digital FPGA (VHDL/Verilog) design
- Low noise analog circuits and/or detector interface design
- Mechanism Control/Monitoring
- Power Conversion (LVPS/HVPS) & Electrical Power Systems (EPS)
- Spacecraft telecommunications and RF
- Command and Data Handling hardware and firmware (C&DH)
- Parts reliability & radiation engineering analysis
- Layout techniques and management as it pertains to signal and power integrity and mixed signal routing/grounding methods
- EMI/EMC design methods and test procedures
- ESD mitigation, vacuum systems, thermal management
- Electrical test and design verification.
- Experience with schematic design tools (OrCad, Allegro, Eagle, Altium).
- Experience with simulation tools (PSpice, LTSpice, MATLAB, Hyperlinx).
- Experience with layout tools (Allegro, Altium, KiCAD, DipTrace).
- Programming experience (C, Python, Ruby, etc.).
- Expert and/or advanced knowledge in:
- High reliability design or designing for space environments (radiation, thermal, vibration)
- Systems Engineering methodologies and practices as applicable to the EE disciplines
- Program Management methodologies, especially pertaining to EE budgets and schedules
- The effects of space environments (temperature, vacuum, radiation, charging) on EEE parts and materials
- Knowledgeable in other engineering disciplines
- Organizational, interpersonal, and technical leadership skills needed for leading small technical teams.
- Proficiency in using NASA documents, processes, and practices.

What We Would Like You to Have
- Expertise and qualification as a subject matter expert in many of the above electrical engineering disciplines.
- Experience leading technical teams or leading technical aspects of proposal development.
- Experience working on interdisciplinary efforts and providing engineering contributions outside of traditional electrical engineering efforts.
- At least 3 years of experience in designing for space environments and reliability.
- Ability to model space radiation environment and their effects on electronic systems.
- Experience with full engineering lifecycle for scientific space instrumentation or spacecraft.
- Experience working with NASA, NPL, and NOAA centers and laboratories.
- Experience engaging private and other government organizations for scientific research or space exploration.
