The Assistant Dean for Advancement reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs in the Office of Advancement and is equivalently accountable to the Dean of the School of Law. The Assistant Dean provides strategic leadership for an advancement program that incorporates resource development, alumni and constituent engagement and advancement marketing and communications functions for the University of Colorado’s School of Law.  

Reporting jointly to the Associate Vice Chancellor and the Dean of the School of Law, this position and its current compliment of 5 full-time advancement staff directly support the Dean to engage donors and alumni and community volunteers to advance the School of Law’s educational, research and service mission. The Assistant Dean serves as a member of the advancement leadership community at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Who We Are

Founded in 1892, the University of Colorado’s School of Law is one of the top public law schools in the United States and has over 7,000 alumni located around the world. The school is home to three research centers, nine legal clinics, and multiple nationally recognized programs including Technology and Intellectual Property Law; Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law; and Public Service Law.
The University of Colorado Boulder is in the planning phase of a potential comprehensive campaign for the Boulder campus. This will be the first campus-level campaign in CU Boulder’s history, with the public launch anticipated in 2021 - 2022, and the campaign concluding in 2026 - 2027, coinciding with the campus’ sesquicentennial anniversary. 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Lead institutional advancement strategy and activities for the University of Colorado’s School of Law.
    • Develop and reinforce best-practice fundraising programs to maximize private support over short-, medium-, and long-term horizons in support of the School’s research, teaching and service mission. Sustain and enhance an emerging donor-centered advancement culture.
  • Manage team of advancement professionals with specific responsibilities for annual, major and principal gift development, donor relations, alumni engagement, and law firm/constituent relations.
  • The Assistant Dean is personally responsible for the management of a portfolio of 60-80 donor and prospective donor relationships across the advancement continuum; team and individual performance metrics are determined annually with the Associate Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs in the Office of Advancement.
  • Collaborate with campus-level Corporate and Foundation Relations teams to deepen corporate and foundation relationships leading to increased charitable grant support for faculty and student research, teaching and service initiatives enhancing grantor satisfaction with their support of School of Law and continuously identifying opportunities to engage charitable foundations in supporting the scholarly work of faculty and students.
  • As a member of the School of Law’s executive team, serve on the Dean’s Cabinet and other committees as appropriate, and meaningfully contribute to institutional strategy, performance and culture.
  • Serve as the primary staffing liaison to the School of Law Alumni Advisory Board, providing strategic support of resource development, alumni, and community engagement activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the School of Law’s leadership to increase institutional readiness for, and fulfillment of, philanthropic investments. Establish effective working relationships with deans, division heads, center directors, and faculty within the School in order to understand their programs and priorities. Ensure that advancement activities are aligned with the Dean’s vision, mission, and goals for the School of Law. 
  • Establish effective working relationships with academic and administrative deans, department chairs, research institute and center directors, and faculty within the School of Law in order to understand their programs and priorities. Ensure that advancement activities are aligned with the School of Law’s vision, mission, and goals of its strategic plan and aligned with the vision, mission and values of the Advancement Division.
  • Responsible for resource management (planning, operating budget planning and performance, etc.) associated with the School of Law’s advancement program.
  • As a member of the CU Boulder Advancement Management Team, contribute to overall campus resource development, constituent engagement and reputation management strategy and activity, focusing resources on critical School and pan-university priorities and objectives.
  • Represent the School of Law’s participation in planning for an anticipated sesquicentennial campaign.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with advancement colleagues across the CU system. Serve as the primary liaison with university and campus administrators, including the Division of Advancement inclusive of the CU Alumni Association and, at the discretion of the Associate Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs, with the University of Colorado Foundation and the CU System Advancement team.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent. 
  • Knowledge of the major components of advancement including development, advancement communications, donor and alumni relations, and special events.
  • At least ten years of successful experience in advancement with major and principal gifts experience and demonstrated success leading and managing a team of advancement professionals, preferably in a higher education environment. 
  • Experience planning and executing all phases of a comprehensive advancement campaign. 
  • Supervisory experience and demonstrated success leading a team to achievement of annual and multi-year goals.

  • An understanding of, and commitment to, the research, teaching and service mission of the School of Law with strong preference granted to advancement professionals with a record of achievement in a law school or research-intensive advancement program of comparable scope and complexity. 
  • Ability to work effectively with deans and directors, University academic and administrative leaders, alumni, community volunteers and corporate and foundation stakeholders to achieve fundraising and alumni and constituent engagement goals.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Graduate degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • At least 7 years Advancement leadership experience.
