Job Summary

Residence Life at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Assistant Director of Residential Operations! Residence Life at the University of Colorado Boulder focuses on student success through implementing innovative programs and services that promote co-curricular engagement. This position is responsible for the management of operational functions that support more than 8,000 residents in 24 different residence halls and up to 2,000 residents in apartment-style living. Through the direct supervision of the Senior Community Center Coordinators and the Coordinator for Residential Operations, this role will manage departmental operations around Community Centers/Front Desks, customer service, move-in/out, and standard operating procedures. This role requires a strong attention to process-oriented details and the ability to plan multiple processes concurrently.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Operations & Administration
  • Guide Residence Life initiatives to create a seamless operational and administrative environment that exceeds student needs and expectations.
  • Chair departmental committees and represent the department to the university and Boulder community as assigned.
  • Manage key operational processes, for both residence halls and apartments, such as move-in, admissions visit days, break coverage and transitions, and closing/move-out.
  • Support apartment staff in the completion of apartment-turn and damage billing processes. 
  • Be responsible for departmental vision around customer service initiatives, processes, and training.
  • Manage Residence Life Operation Manuals, Memos, and Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring regular updates and on-time distribution. 
  • Assist in the coordination of responses to facility concerns and vandalism in residence halls and apartments.
  • Partner closely with Student Affairs Communications to create and send student and family-facing communication about operational processes, such as move-in. 
  • Supervise in-hall administrative processes, ensuring staff complete Change of Status forms (COS), Room Condition Forms (RCF), Apartment inventories, etc., promptly. 
  • Maintain inventory of all departmentally managed spaces, coordinating office moves, access, and updates as needed. 
  • Support the professional staff and Faculty In Residence onboarding & off-boarding experience by ensuring apartments are prepared, cleaned, and furniture is maintained. 
  • Partner closely with CU Conference Services to support front-desk operations throughout the summer.
  • Additional duties as required to support departmental needs. 
Supervision/Performance Management
  • Directly supervise 1-2 Residential Operations Coordinators, 2-3 Senior Community Center Coordinators, and indirectly supervise 4-6 Community Center Coordinators and 100+ student staff members in multiple capacities.
  • Assist the Senior Assistant Director of Staff Experience in the implementation of processes to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate exceptionally motivated, student affairs-focused staff at all position levels of Residence Life.
  • Conduct intentional performance reviews for professional staff and maintain ongoing accountability focused on learning and development.
  • Assist professional staff in building inclusive and caring relationships with student staff and students within the residential community.
  • Ensure compliance with student staff-facing processes, such as late pay processing, shift scheduling, and training. 
  • Train residence life professional staff and student staff on operational procedures. 
  • Support the ACUHO-i summer internship recruitment, selection, onboarding, and development processes. 
External Relations
  • Provide excellent support and leadership to all external partners through service-minded attention to the broader housing organization, Student Affairs, and university missions.
  • Serve and lead student affairs committees as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners to coordinate residence life response to high-impact events, including adjustments to building access and building locking plans. 
  • Work with family members regarding concerns for on-campus residents.
  • Assist in campus retention and enrollment management efforts, including participation in admissions visit events and summer orientation experiences.
  • Assist conference services with summer conference operations.
  • Serve as a Residence Life liaison to Housing Facilities Services, Environmental Services, Campus Dining Services, University Housing, Access Services, BuffOneCard Office, Integrated Security, and finance units.
  • Serve as a liaison to non-University contractual partners such as cleaning services, laundry services, and mail services.
Strategic Planning
  • Lead effectively in coordinating all planning, implementation, and evaluation for assigned projects and committee responsibilities in Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Support the development and furthering of the organizational philosophy, mission, and programs within Residence Life.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and interpretation of benchmarking and community surveys for Residence Life.
  • Act as a representative of Residence Life and Student Affairs on campus.
  • Contribute to developing the vision, prioritizing tasks, and implementing strategies in the Residence Life planning process.
  • Provide exceptional leadership for all strategic planning, implementation, and assessment, all assigned initiatives, and all committee work in Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Partner with the Student Affairs Planning Assessment and Data Analytics office to review operational assessment data, using metrics to drive future success.
  • Ensure departmental goals, values, and central initiatives are being supported and implemented within your area. 
Fiscal Resource Management
  • Administer all fiscal processes with maximum integrity and timeliness.
  • Follow all federal, state, university, and departmental budget procedures.
  • Assist in the development and management of Residence Life budgets to align with the department's critical initiatives.
  • Research and propose areas of efficiency within the area of responsibility. Track and report annual efficiencies. 
Emergency Response
  • While serving on-call, be available to arrive on campus to evaluate situational needs, coordinate with relevant campus partners and leaders, and direct Residence Life response. 
  • Serve in a 24/7 on-call rotation for 9,000+ residents.
  • Provide crisis management assistance and follow-up.
  • Uphold departmental and university crisis response policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority, assisting in reporting incident information as needed.

What You Should Know

  • Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, plus regular evening and weekend commitments. Flexible work schedule may be available. This position serves in an emergency on-call rotation that requires occasional physical response to campus on nights and weekends. 

What We Can Offer

The starting salary for this position is $75,000. Onboarding assistance may be available per Student Affairs guidelines.

What We Require

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a related field, equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • 3 years of progressive, Residence Life experience, or relevant experience upon hire.
  • Experience must also demonstrate responsible organizational authority.
  • Management experience within a customer service environment.
  • Experience supervising professional and/or paraprofessional staff.
