Job Summary

Residence Life at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Assistant Director of Residential Support! Residence Life at the University of Colorado Boulder focuses on student success through implementing innovative programs and services that promote co-curricular engagement. This position is focused on the creation, management, and implementation of Residential Support in Residence Life. Through the direct supervision of the Managers of Residential Support, this Assistant Director will assist in the department’s vision and implementation of residential support regarding care, crisis, and follow-up. The Assistant Director will also foster a positive departmental culture in conjunction with the leadership team.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Student and Staff Support
  • Manage and delegate incoming student concerns for their area to the appropriate staff.
  • Ensure follow-up on student concerns is completed and documented.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Directors of Residential Engagement to develop and manage the roommate agreement process to ensure completion and follow through.
  • Assist in the management of the emergency/temporary room relocation process.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Residential Support to create and implement assessment and benchmarking surveys to measure the impact of student support outreach initiatives.
  • Address elevated concerns that rise above direct reports and ensure senior leadership is notified as necessary.
  • Develop initiatives around large-scale community incidents to ensure all impacted parties are supported.
  • Support staff after responding to potentially impactful events.
  • Ensure student concerns and conduct cases are documented and addressed promptly.
  • Develop and assist in the implementation of safety and support initiatives on identified high-impact days.
  • Advocate for student concerns up to relevant university and campus partners as needed. 
  • Ensure support for the needs of students experiencing illness or injury as directed by the Associate Director of Residential Support.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Directors of Residential Engagement to develop initiatives related to student needs and concerns.
  • Assist the Associate Director of Residential Support in creating, updating, and maintaining departmental Emergency Response Manuals.
Supervision/Performance Management
  • Directly supervise 2-4 manager-level live-on professional staff, and indirectly supervise 3-6 entry-level live-on professional staff and 50+ student leaders in multiple capacities.
  • Assist the Senior Assistant Director in establishing processes for recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating dedicated staff at all levels in Residence Life.
  • Conduct intentional performance reviews for professional staff and maintain ongoing accountability focused on learning and development.
  • Assist professional staff in building inclusive and caring relationships with Student Staff and Leaders, and students within the residential community.
  • Lead the training and development for professional staff positions focused on crisis response and residential support in collaboration with the Senior Assistant Director of Staff Experience. 
  • Ensure all federal, state, university, and departmental hiring processes are followed.
  • Ensure university training requirements for all direct reports are met.
Leadership & Strategic Planning
  • Lead effectively in managing all planning, implementation, assessment, assigned initiatives, and committee work in Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Support the development and furthering of the organizational philosophy, mission, and programs within Residence Life.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and interpretation of benchmarking and community surveys for residence life.
  • Contribute to developing the vision, prioritizing resources, and implementing strategies within the Residence Life planning process.
  • Act as a representative of Residence Life and Student Affairs on campus.
  • Ensure departmental goals, values, and central initiatives are being supported and implemented within your area. 
External Relations
  • Provide excellent support and leadership to all external partners through service-minded attention to the broader housing organization, Student Affairs, and university missions.
  • Serve and lead Student Affairs committees as needed.
  • Work with family members regarding concerns for on-campus residents.
  • Assist in campus retention and enrollment management efforts, including participation in admissions visit events and summer orientation experiences.
  • Maintain positive and ongoing relationships with necessary campus partners such as Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, Student Support and Case Management, CU Police Department, Office of Victims Assistance, Disability Services, and the Office of Institutional Equity & Compliance.
  • Collaborate with Basic Needs to manage Basic Needs Housing spaces.
  • Attend Students of Concern Meetings in the absence of the Associate Director of Residential Support.
Operations & Administration
  • Guide Residence Life initiatives to create a seamless residential environment that exceeds student needs and expectations.
  • Chair departmental committees and represent the department to the university and Boulder community as assigned.
  • Assist with facility concerns in residence halls.
  • Serve as a residence life liaison to Housing Facilities Services, Environmental Services, Campus Dining Services, University Housing, Access Services, and finance units to ensure a positive physical environment aimed at student success. 
  • Support the Assistant Director of Operations by leading direct and indirect reports through move-in, move-out, break transitions, and other high-volume operational periods.
  • Curate, review, and maintain accurate and current standard operating procedures. 
  • Administer all fiscal processes with maximum integrity and timeliness.
  • Follow all federal, state, university, and departmental budget procedures.
  • Assist in the development and management of Residence Life budgets to align with the department's critical initiatives.
  • Ensure duty logs and schedules are created and maintained for entry-level staff and student staff.
  • Additional duties as required to support departmental needs.
Emergency Response
  • While serving on-call, be available to arrive on campus to evaluate situational needs, coordinate with relevant campus partners and leaders, and direct Residence Life response. 
  • Direct and evaluate all emergency and crisis responses within your assigned area during operating hours.
  • Serve in a 24/7 on-call rotation for 9,000+ residents.
  • Provide crisis management assistance and follow-up.
  • Uphold departmental and university crisis response policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority, assisting in reporting incident information as needed.

What You Should Know

  • Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, plus regular evening and weekend commitments. Flexible work schedule may be available. This position serves in an emergency on-call rotation that requires occasional physical response to campus on nights and weekends. 

What We Can Offer

The starting salary for this position is $75,000. Onboarding assistance may be available per Student Affairs guidelines.

What We Require

  • Master’s Degree in a related field. (Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.)
  • 3 years of progressive Student Affairs/academic experience upon hire.
  • Experience must also demonstrate involvement in a Housing program.
  • Experience supervising professional and/or paraprofessional staff.
