Job Summary

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado at Boulder invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor faculty position to start in August 2020, in the general field of Cosmochemistry.  

Depending on the background and teaching interest, the successful candidate could be housed in the Department of Physics, Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences or Chemistry, and will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA.  We are the world’s only research institute to have sent instruments to all eight planets and Pluto.

Mission Statement: LASP seeks continuously to maintain and improve the capability to pursue key science questions using experimental, laboratory, theoretical, and information systems approaches. LASP is dedicated to building and maintaining a unique synergism of expertise in space science, engineering, and spacecraft operations. Through research projects, LASP participates actively in the training of the future leaders of space research and helps the University of Colorado to educate students with valued technical and scientific skills. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The successful candidate is expected to establish a vigorous research program complementary to the ongoing research of the Institute for Modeling Plasmas, Atmospheres, and Cosmic Dust (IMPACT:, a node in NASA’s Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI). 

Areas of interest include: 
  • Analysis and interpretation of composition measurements using mass spectrometry of cosmic dust for studies of the origins and evolution of the solar system. 
  • Development of new laboratory experiments at the Colorado Dust Accelerator Facility to support instrument development and data analysis. 
  • Using dust composition measurements to model the chemical evolution of solar system bodies: Moon, asteroids, comets, and all other planetary objects.

What We Require

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Physics, Planetary Sciences, Chemistry, or related areas completed by March 15, 2020.
