Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Music invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology! We seek an outstanding scholar of ethnomusicology, broadly defined, who can complement the current faculty and collaborate with scholars in the College of Music and across campus. We are interested in growing our offerings in musical cultures of Asia, Latin America, or Indigenous peoples, as well as popular music, ecomusicology, or cultural policy, though we encourage applications from scholars of all specialties.

The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

Founded in 1920, the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music offers a wide range of programs for undergraduate and graduate study, uniquely combining advanced musical and musicological training with professionally oriented experiences and the rich resources of a leading research university. Active as award-winning professional performers, composers and scholars, College of Music faculty members are committed to helping students develop their talents and succeed in their chosen musical and scholarly endeavors. The College offers seven undergraduate and graduate degrees in 23 fields of study, along with an array of interdisciplinary opportunities, including certificates in music technology and entrepreneurship.

The Musicology area, well regarded nationally and internationally, offers a BA Musicology – World Music degree; BM Musicology; and Ph.D. in Musicology with historical musicology and ethnomusicology concentrations. The dynamic faculty scholars, with research trajectories in both historical musicology and ethnomusicology, emphasize an integrated core of courses for all musicology students. They engage in collaborative works with faculty in several academic units across the University of Colorado System in the areas of European Studies, international affairs, global health, media and communication, and historical and archaeological studies. Our recent doctoral graduates have won prestigious awards and conducted international research on a range of interdisciplinary topics such as migration, ecology, diplomacy and strategic studies to name but a few in several world culture and geographic areas including Latin America (Mexico, Cuba, Chile); Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa), Europe (Romania, Hungary, Spain, Sweden), Asia (Jordan, Japan), and among the North American First Nations and immigrant communities.

The American Music Research Center (AMRC) is a major resource that provides training for our students in archival skills and ethnographic work and documentation. It is a joint venture between the College of Music and the University Libraries devoted to discovering, sharing, and preserving American music of all kinds. The centerpiece is a celebrated repository of rare publications and manuscripts—housed in and curated by the Libraries—that includes significant resources in early American sacred music, the silent film era and the swing era, along with the region’s most important collection of manuscripts and other materials devoted to Colorado and the American West. Further information is available at http://www.colorado.edu/amrc/
