Job Summary
The University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for an Assistant Vice Chancellor, Compensation & Talent Acquisition. This position provides leadership and oversight of Boulder campus human resources programs in the areas of compensation, position management and talent acquisition. The core mission and responsibility of this position is to design, implement, manage, and communicate the campus’ compensation and talent acquisition strategies, including all related functional program areas such as position management, applicant tracking system management and compensation and recruiting data analytics.
The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Compensation & Talent Acquisition closely collaborates with the Boulder campus Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, other campus HR leaders, the Provost's Office and Financial leadership to define and implement a total rewards approach to compensation for the CU Boulder campus and ensure efficient, effective and compliant recruitment and pay programs.
This position leads and supervises multiple units with subordinate manager(s), including the development of strategies and processes which contribute to the campus’ mission and accountability for services provided. This position serves as a key strategic advisor to the Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, campus executive leadership and CU system-wide leaders.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Exercise leadership:
- Contribute personal efforts and inspire others, particularly direct reports, to contribute to the achievement of campus-wide strategies and initiatives.
- Create a culture and climate conducive to high-impact teamwork, and which values innovation and continuous improvement.
- Improve year-over-year performance by growing and developing managers and individual contributors assigned within areas of responsibility, and by using performance data to drive employee effectiveness and efficiency.
- Ensure high levels of collaboration with campus operations and academic leaders and functions.
- Serve as strategic partner to the campus leadership, particularly regarding talent acquisition and compensation.
Drive campus compensation strategy:
- Ensure a strategic approach to employee compensation across the campus for all employee types.
- Define and maintain an effective campus compensation philosophy as approved by campus executive leadership, and engage key collaborators to support the compensation strategy and its accompanying tactics, guidelines, and policies.
- Make relevant connections between campus strategies and compensation practices and ensure that approaches to compensation further the achievement of campus strategy as defined by campus and/or system-level executives.
- Design a comprehensive compensation system for the campus. Engage executives, deans, vice chancellors, and other key partners to embrace and support the system. Ensure that the system retains relevance over time.
- Develop relevant practices, guidelines, and policies. Socialize compensation practices and policies appropriately with key partners to gain broad support.
- Provide thought leadership in securing appropriate market salary surveys to ensure effective and competitive campus pay practices. Build the case for investment when needed.
- Provide leadership and stewardship to the annual campus merit increase process.
Ensure fair and transparent pay practices:
- Provide strategic leadership and direction for campus and/or CU system-wide equal pay practices. Make it easier for campus collaborators to understand and apply fair and equitable practices.
- Ensure that position descriptions and job title structures are effective and internally consistent, that processes to create, evaluate, revise and apply them are efficient, and that they retain relevance over time.
- Design compensation reports for executives, deans, and vice chancellors and other key senior managers which improve understanding of the impact of compensation decisions.
- Create and maintain HR compensation and talent acquisition metrics, data reports, queries, dashboards and reporting tools.
- In consultation with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Employee and Organizational Development, design educational programs for the CU Boulder community focused on compensation.
- Design approaches to communicating our total rewards strategy with prospective and current applicants, and new employees.
Direct the campus' ability to source and select the best talent:
- Lead the development and utilization of a compelling employment brand and the expression of that brand to internal and external constituencies with a service attitude to key collaborator groups.
- Be a leader with vision in the effort to attract, hire, and retain top candidates that reflect a culture where all can thrive and everyone matters.
- Find and act upon opportunities to improve candidate alignment with the success criteria identified for new and existing positions, the culture and values of the hiring organization and the core success behaviors for the broader campus community.
- Continuously improve and evolve the recruitment process to ensure that it is highly efficient and that hiring managers recognize and appreciate its value.
- Innovate in the areas of outreach, advertising, candidate sourcing, candidate assessment, interviewing and selection.
- Ensure institutional compliance with hiring guidelines, regulations and applicable employment laws.
Supervise others:
- Provide direct supervision of the Compensation/Position Management and Talent Acquisition teams.
- Manage the day-to-day activities of the teams, including prioritizing work assignments; providing coaching, mentoring and effective employee development; and serving as an escalation point for critical issues, contacts, and requests.
Serve as a member of the HR Leadership Team:
- Serve as a member of the HR Leadership Team and participate in overall planning and stewardship of HR.
- Represent HR to the broader campus through presentations and cross- campus working groups.
- Collaborate and initiate change in peripheral areas to HR like Research Administration, Faculty Affairs, Academic Affairs, etc.
- Serve on campus-wide committees and initiatives as a leader, strategic resource and subject matter expert.

- This position is hybrid. The in-person schedule will vary each week according to business needs.
What We Can Offer
The annual salary range for this full-time position is $154,700 - $193,300.

What We Require
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and 8+ years of professional human resources experience OR Master's/JD degree from an accredited college or university and 6+ years of professional human resources experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 6+ years of experience with human resources employee compensation programs.
- 5+ years of managerial responsibility.
What You Will Need
- Demonstrable competence in critical thinking, innovative planning, researching and resolving complex problems.
- Demonstrated abilities in partnering with leaders to achieve organizational objectives, negotiating in a complex environment, effectively leading teams, coaching developing and mentoring subordinates, and execution of objectives.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including public speaking competency.
- Understanding of HRIS systems.
What We Would Like You to Have
- A Master’s Degree or higher in HR, OD, organizational leadership, business, public administration, or a related field.
- Certification in one or more of the following: CCP, PHR, SPHR, GPHR or SHRM equivalent.
- Progressively responsible management experience in an HR organization.
- Experience analyzing, compiling, and communicating data from complex source systems.
- Experience working in an academic environment or state agency environment.
