Job Summary

The College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) encourages applications for an Associate Director for CEAS Communications and Marketing! This position is a leadership position on the Communication and Marketing team that supervises four communications specialists, maintains a high-performance team and guides the development of communications and marketing plans to advance unit priorities. As a senior member of the team, this role contributes communications and marketing leadership and support for unit, college and campus priorities. As the primary liaison to Advancement, this position facilitates communications in support of alumni engagement and fundraising priorities.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Unit Communications Management

Build and maintain a high-performance team that provides high-quality critical communications and marketing support to departments, programs and units across the college.
  • Collaborate with unit communicators in partnership with unit leadership to develop marketing and communications plans that align with college and university priorities in four critical areas: reputation, recruitment, retention/engagement and advancement. Collaborate with relevant campus teams for planning and implementation.
  • Establish standards for levels of support for departments, programs and units. Ensure the sharing of information and ideas across units.
  • Provide editing and writing support for unit communicators. Ensure communicators are consistent and coordinated in alignment with university branding guidelines and AP Style. 
  • Maintain consistent communication with direct reports to provide guidance, share information and be a sounding board for brainstorming and problem solving.
  • Coach and mentor communicators to do their best work and maintain job satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with unit communicators to establish annual goals to ensure professional development. 
  • Regularly evaluate communicator portfolios and workloads to ensure balance across communicators and units. 
College Communications

Provide communications and marketing leadership and support for units, unit/college leadership and college priorities. 
  • Act as the primary communications and marketing contact for select units. Develop unit subject matter expertise and attend relevant meetings.
  • Provide communications and marketing support, including campaign plans, digital newsletters, stories, web updates and marketing content. 
  • Contribute to the development of leadership communications. Write, edit, prepare and distribute messages from the dean, associate and assistant deans and college leaders.
  • Contribute to major roll-outs of campus and college initiatives related to strategic priorities.
  • As a senior member of the team, contribute to issues management and the development of dashboards, guidelines, systems and procedures to clarify and improve teamwork and report out on progress.
  • Collaborate with college leadership to promote college’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion across all platforms, communications and audiences.
Advancement Communications

Serve as the primary liaison for the college Advancement team (alumni and donor engagement).
  • Collaborate with the college Assistant Dean of Advancement, the college Senior Director of Alumni Engagement and their teams to develop content promoting alumni successes, alumni engagement opportunities, donor and foundation initiatives and industry partnerships.
  • Write and edit content and materials to support alumni and donor relations. Maintain positive, professional relationships with alumni and donors.
  • Lead the communications and marketing team in developing strategies to support alumni and donor engagement across the college.

This position is a hybrid position that is expected to be on campus and will have some remote flexibility.

What We Can Offer

The salary range is $80,000 - $87,000. Relocation assistance is available for this position.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism or related field. 
  • Five or more years of increasingly responsible professional experience in communications, marketing, journalism or related fields including two years of supervisory or management experience of full-time professional level employees. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

  • Extensive skills and experience working with MS Office, Google Suite and Adobe Creative Suite products, publishing and web software.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and presentation abilities.
  • Strong project management skills and cross-functional project team experience.
  • Ability to manage and analyze data and present numerical data effectively.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in a journalism, communications, public relations, marketing or closely related field. 
  • Seven or more years of extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience in professional communications roles.
  • Supervisory/leadership experience, including team-oriented management and a demonstrated ability to build consensus among diverse constituencies.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a broad spectrum of marketing and communications media, including print, social media, web and other digital technologies.
  • Seven or more years of extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience in professional communications roles.
  • Experience and skill successfully performing communication activities at a higher education institution or organization with similar institutional priorities and performance standards.
  • Experience developing web content and using analytics to inform web strategy and audience engagement.
  • Knowledge of graphic design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Familiarity with the engineering or technology business/operations environment.
  • Experience working with vendors.
