Who We Are

BioServe Space Technologies is a Center within the Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. For over 31 years, the Center has specialized in conducting microgravity life sciences research. A major part of enabling flight research involves the design and development of specialized flight hardware. BioServe designs, builds, flight qualifies and operates space flight certified hardware on board the International Space Station (ISS) and other space vehicles.  BioServe also designs hardware for other unique space applications.

BioServe has an exciting opportunity for a bright, innovative and hard-working automation and test engineer who is comfortable working in a flexible, creative, and scientific environment and takes pride in their work. The successful candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of and experience with LabVIEW, Microsoft operating systems and applications, code development and overall software systems configuration and management. A positive attitude toward work and a willingness to learn and support the Center’s mission is a must. The successful candidate will be working in small teams, so the ability to excel with minimal supervision is crucial. 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Maintain software for current fleet of space flight hardware, including flight and ground systems.
  • Develop new software to support powered space flight components that integrate within BioServe’s current on orbit facilities.
  • Support instrumentation setup and LabVIEW VI development for ground-based testing.
  • Support the maintenance, testing and configuration of all ground to space networks.
  • Support function, performance, safety, verification and experiment-specific testing of spaceflight hardware/software systems.
  • Support flight hardware/software use during crew operations on board ISS for BioServe supported experiments.
  • Develop and maintain flight hardware/software procedures and processes including upgrades or deployment of space flight experiment-specific software. 
  • Train BioServe engineering and operations personnel on the use and operations of all BioServe hardware/software.
  • Develop software to monitor and control future experiment-specific hardware.

What We Require

  • Must be able to effectively participate in a small team environment with members of engineering, science and project management disciplines.
  • Must be able to manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or related field, plus 4 years or more related experience or Master’s Degree in above fields with 2 years or more of related experience. 
  • Must be an NI Certified LabVIEW Developer (or better).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience in aerospace, defense or medical device industry.
  • Experience with NASA requirements for space flight hardware.
  • Experience with software development using C, C++ and Python.
  • Experience with data analysis and simulation using MATLAB.
  • Experience in system and network administration.
