Job Summary

Housing Facilities Services (HFS) at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for a Building Mechanic! This role will keep all phases of housing units in working order with the alteration, maintenance, and repair of a variety of buildings and mechanical systems; as well as provide on-call assistance to all areas of Housing Services during both, working, evenings and weekends and on emergency on-call basis. This position is required to be in an on-call rotation with other plumbers and pipe I trades.

Housing Facilities Services (HFS) is a comprehensive facility management operation that provides around-the-clock support to over 10,000 residents and 20,000 conference guests annually. Services include maintenance, repair, renovation, project management, capital construction, housekeeping, and grounds-keeping operations. HFS has approximately 190 full-time employees, as well as approximately 80 part-time and student staff, who all strive to give residents the best living experience possible.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


  • Repair or replace garbage disposals, drain wastes and p-traps, unplugs tubs, toilets, sinks, garbage disposals, floor drains and main lines using both hand and power auger. Repairs or replaces faucets, shower valves, shower heads, water stops, ball valves, gate valves. Repairs, rebuilds or replaces toilet tank ballcocks, replaces wax ring and handle kits, supply tubes and flappers.
  • Also assist journeyman plumber with installation of water heaters and boilers.
  • The use of a University vehicle is required for the performance of some of these duties.


  • Analyze and determine malfunction of furnace and boilers, making necessary repairs, replaces gas valves, limit switches, blower motors, thermocouples and thermostats and calibrates all of the above.
  • Trouble shoots electronic ignition systems, maintains and replace all heat and domestic hot water circulating pumps and motors.


  • Analyze and make repairs on electric appliances (stoves, refrigerators, water heaters) including installation and rewiring of new burners, controls and burner elements, using appropriate wiring diagrams. Replaced light switches outlets, and ballasts on light fixtures.
  • Hang new light fixtures.
  • Rebuild and overhaul bathroom fans and furnace motors.
  • Install new range hoods and makes necessary electrical hook ups.


  • Uses carpentry skills to repair doors, door jambs, windows, cabinets and doors, counter tops.
  • Hang new doors including outside, security doors, closet doors (bi-fold, accordion, by pass type) and installs all affiliated hardware (closures, panic bars, locks, hinges).
  • Also make minor furniture repairs.

General Duties

  • Board up broken windows, re-glaze windows, cut and hang new mirrors, change lock cylinders, install detectors, repair or replace curtain rods, towel bars, closet rods.
  • Repair and or replace window and door screens.

What You Should Know

  • The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday 7:30am- 4:00pm.

What We Can Offer

  • The salary for this position is $45,300 - $50,000.

What We Require

  • Two years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. 
  • Appropriate education or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical.

What You Will Need

  • Experience and knowledge of building mechanical systems.
  • Customer Service, including working well with others.
  • Mechanical ability.
  • Technical expertise.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • A rounded background in building maintenance and preventative maintenance.
  • At least two years of HVAC experience.
  • At least two years of plumbing experience.
  • An HVAC certification.
  • Management Experience.
  • Computer Experience: Micro Soft, Kronos, TMA or other CMMS system.
  • Asbestos and Lead Awareness Certifications.
  • Level 1 asbestos abatement within 6 months of hire date.
