Job Summary

Earth Lab, funded by the University of Colorado Boulder’s “Grand Challenge: Our Space, Our Future” and part of CIRES, seeks a post-doctoral researcher to join a dynamic team pushing the frontiers of coupled Earth and social system science (http://www.colorado.edu/earthlab/). Earth Lab’s mission is to harness the data revolution through research, analytics, and education to accelerate understanding of global environmental change to help society better manage and adapt.

Earth Lab is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Scholar to lead a research agenda in the following area: Fire risk assessment for resilience planning, evacuation preparation, and mitigation strategies. In collaboration with Deloitte, a leading global provider of consulting, risk and related services, we are looking to advance a fire risk research agenda in a solutions science context to improve the effectiveness of wildfire mitigation, response, and recovery efforts. Key research questions are:

  1. How has fire hazard and exposure changed across the U.S.?
  2. How has urban, suburban, and rural development affected evacuation routes in fire-prone areas?
  3. How can we incorporate social and settlement vulnerability into fire risk assessments? To answer these questions, we will use diverse data sources including satellite imagery and large social-environmental datasets, geospatial and time series analyses, and effective visualizations. Efforts will include local case studies and regional to national-scale analysis. By combining Earth Lab’s research and advanced analytics and Deloitte’s consulting experience with stakeholder groups, the research team will design and deliver innovative solutions that generate value and positive impact on our communities.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Work with the research team to refine methodologies and lead and submit one manuscript for publication to a peer-reviewed journal by the end of Year 1.
  • Contribute to discussions with Deloitte and other industry, federal, state, and academic partners.
  • Contribute to opportunities to make Earth Lab visible in the community (e.g., blogs, conferences, etc).
  • Contribute to the open, reproducible science objectives of Earth Lab, which include creating and publishing well-documented datasets and code workflows that could serve multiple users within Earth Lab or other audiences.

What You Should Know

  • This position is a one year full-time appointment, with the possibility of an additional one year extension (based on performance and funding availability).
  • The hired candidate must be ready to begin work, ideally by January 2023.
  • This will be a hybrid position with some in person work and some remote work. Hybrid work arrangements will follow current CIRES and university guidance and policies. This is not a fully remote position. The in-person work will be conducted in the Earth Lab offices in the SEEC Building on the CU Boulder East Campus.

What We Can Offer

  • We can offer a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.
  • The annual hiring salary range for this position is $54,000 - $59,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.

What We Require

  • Ph.D. in statistics, data science, computer science, geography, environmental science, remote sensing, urban or regional planning, or other related field.
  • Experience working with diverse spatial datasets from satellite data to model outputs and incident records.
  • Strong quantitative background and advanced analytics capabilities (e.g., AI, ML, Bayesian approaches, or other).
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary & cross-sector team.
  • Experience in R and/or Python programming and appropriate analytic tools.
  • Background experience in natural hazards and/or risk.

What You Will Need

  • Demonstrated contributions to open science (i.e., publicly available and/or reproducible data, code, workflows, and/or tools) or willingness to contribute to open science.
  • Experience in integrating and analyzing large, and/or heterogeneous datasets. Preferably, this will include experience with both rural and urban land-use types.
  • Demonstrated publication writing skills.
  • Team spirit and interest in working in interdisciplinary settings, including across sectors with industry partners.
