CU-Boulder’s Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) provides data science for a number of research initiatives around the campus. We are encouraging applications for an Earth Lab Software Developer to join our team.

As part of CIRES and the CU-Boulder’s “Grand Challenge: Our Space, Our Future,” Earth Lab pushes the frontiers of coupled Earth and social system science. Earth Lab’s mission is to harness the wave of Earth observations from aerospace platforms (drone, aircraft, and space) in conjunction with other sources (e.g., social media, etc.) to better understand the pace and pattern of environmental change. Earth Lab:

  • Capitalizes on the data deluge from space to accelerate science;
  • Reduces environmental risk and surprise by using this wealth of data to understand and predict slow and abrupt Earth system change to help society manage and adapt; and,
  • Trains a new generation of data scientists in Earth analytics.

Earth Lab’s Analytics Hub is a state of the art analytics nexus that supports researchers and decision-makers to harness the data revolution to advance knowledge of the dynamics and interactions of the Earth system, towards actionable insights and tools. This includes applying innovative analytics, developing data tools and contributing to open source software to facilitate data curation, using scalable compute from in-house supercomputing to commercial cloud, and collecting data from drones and field surveys. Earth Lab is seeking a software developer to join its dynamic team. This position will report to the Earth Lab Analytics Hub Director.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Support transition of science code and workflows by developing data tools for and contributing to open source software.
  • Consult with and advise Earth Lab students, researchers, and collaborators to transition workflows to scalable compute (supercomputer and commercial cloud) in languages they use and understand.
  • Assist with development, maintenance, and usage reporting for Earth Lab’s Analytics Hub.
  • Instruct users on how to use Analytics Hub services.
  • Work with Earth Lab data scientists, instructors, and cyber-infrastructure collaborators to optimize the user experience of resources to enable interoperability and long-term sustainability and usability.
  • Participate in and lead training efforts, including workshops/trainings for postdocs, graduate, or professional students.

What You Should Know

  • This position is a full-time appointment.
  • The hired candidate must be ready to begin work by July 1st, 2022.
  • The position requires in person work time as conditions allow following Earth Lab and CIRES guidance. The in person time will be in the Earth Lab offices in the SEEC Building on the CU Boulder East Campus.

What We Can Offer

  • CIRES can offer a generous compensation package.
  • The annual hiring salary range for this position is $68,000.00 - $102,000.00. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  • Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in the computer sciences or related fields with strong programming experience collaborating with data scientists.
  • Three years of experience in software programming using open-source languages like Python and R.
  • Proven experience using high-performance computing and commercial cloud.
  • Proficiency in working with version control (e.g., git, subversion) and containerized workflows (docker). 

What You Will Need

  • Strong communication skills, and work well with other scientists/researchers in intensive face-to-face and remote collaborations.
  • In-depth knowledge of programming best practices for using scalable compute resources with open-source programming languages (R and python).
  • Expert knowledge in the use of scalable computing resources (super computers and commercial cloud).
  • Previous experience with collaborative coding (e.g., git, GitHub).
  • Experience using open source software.
  • Strong desire to educate academic researchers on Analytics Hub services, which includes a strong service background.
  • Ability to contribute to a diverse and inclusive environment as part of the CU Boulder Inclusive Excellence vision.
  • Team spirit and interest in interdisciplinary settings, with a willingness to engage with Earth Lab’s Researchers, Analytics Hub and Education Initiative teams.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Advanced quantitative skills in computer science, programming, cyberinfrastructure, containerization, and data management.
  • Experience working with research scientists and automating workflows.
  • Knowledge of Earth observations and experience working APIs.
  • Previous teaching experience.
  • Experience contributing to open source software.
