The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Ph.D. Research Scientist to conduct measurements related to understanding stratospheric chemistry and physics. This position is located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) in Boulder, Colorado. The selected candidate will work in close collaboration with the CIRES and federal research staff of CSL in developing and deploying a new chemical ionization mass spectrometer for measurements in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere from high altitude research aircraft, such as the NASA WB-57 and ER-2. These measurements are needed to improve understanding of stratospheric processes that are important for Earth’s climate and the chemistry of the ozone layer, including the consequences of possible stratospheric aerosol climate intervention strategies. We seek a hardworking, motivated scientist to address this urgent research need.

In the Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratories, researchers develop and use instruments to make detailed atmospheric measurements, conduct laboratory experiments, design and execute field missions, analyze observations, and use sophisticated computer models to better understand how our changing atmosphere is influencing climate - and therefore people.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Participate in the development of a chemical ionization mass spectrometer for operation on high altitude research aircraft
  • Conduct laboratory tests to evaluate and optimize the operation of the mass spectrometer for high altitude measurements
  • Participate in airborne science field missions using chemical ionization mass spectrometry to make atmospheric measurements. Field missions require deployment for a period of 2 weeks to 2 months, typically once or twice per year.
  • Process and analyze mass spectrometric data from field missions. This requires the interpretation of multi-parameter data sets, interaction with other instrument investigators, and the use of models and model results.
  • Present findings at scientific meetings and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals

  • The position is available for a period of two years, with the possibility of extension.

What We Require

  • A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Atmospheric Science or a related field
  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of sophisticated instrumentation in a laboratory or field environment

What You Will Need

  • Interest in building and using custom scientific instrumentation to make measurements in the atmosphere and analyzing these observations to address atmospheric problems of modern interest
  • Ability to think independently and work in collaboration with other members of the team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

What We Would Like You To Have

Experience with data analysis and interpretation for the presentation of scientific results at meetings and in scientific journals.
