Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder, Colorado and the NOAA Global Systems Division (GSD) have an immediate opening for a Professional Research Assistant or a Research Associate with experience in numerical weather prediction and/or air quality modeling to develop and support state-of-the-art coupled meteorology-chemistry models. The scientist will have an appointment within the Model Development Branch (MDB) of the ESRL Global Systems Division.

MDB has been leading the development of several coupled meteorology-chemistry models for many years. One of these models – Weather Research Forecasting coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) is a widely used regional air quality model around the world (https://ruc.noaa.gov/wrf/wrf-chem/). The coupled meteorology-chemistry models developed at ESRL/GSD allow simulating complex aerosol-meteorology interactions on regional and global scales. In recent years MDB in collaboration with other groups at NOAA, EPA, and NASA has been leading the development of a new air quality forecasting model based on Finite Volume Cubed Sphere dynamical core (FV3), which is selected for the new operational weather forecast modeling system by NOAA/NCEP.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Implement new gas, aerosol and other atmospheric chemistry parameterizations in FV3-Chem and WRF-Chem models.
  • Assist with coupling new modules via the Common Community Physics Package (CCPP) and testing of new code developments.
  • Evaluate the models using atmospheric data from in-situ and remote sensing observations.
  • Assist with community support, participate in developer meetings, teleconferences and contribute to project reports. 

What You Should Know

This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305. If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.

What We Require

  • PhD or Master's degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Applied Math, Physics, Chemistry or a related research area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

What You Will Need

  • Excellent programming (Fortran or C#) and scripting skills.
  • Fluent knowledge of Fortran 90.
  • Expertise with Linux and UNIX operating systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience with support of community code.
  • Experience with WRF or FV3 dynamic cores.
  • Experience in developing online weather/chemistry models.
  • Experience with diagnostics and verification of meteorological forecasts.
  • Experience with software for revision control management, such as SVN and Git.
  • Experience in UNIX-based scripting languages.
  • Experience in working with numerical models.
