Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), University of Colorado Boulder, has an opening for a Postdoctoral Associate within the Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) in Boulder, Colorado! The researcher will develop new radiation and cloud products for use on towers, ships, aircraft and other platforms. The position will include research into novel instrument deployment and calibration techniques, updating and development of critical data products for the use of surface radiation measurements in cloud and aerosol studies, and scientific insights into the radiative effects of clouds, aerosols, and surface properties important to weather, climate, and applications like renewable energy. The researcher will work for the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder but located at the NOAA David Skaggs Research Center, Boulder, CO. This role will work alongside federal and university employees engaged in research examining the Earth’s surface radiation budget and climate forcing properties of atmospheric constituents from short-term field campaigns as well as long-term U.S. surface radiation, aerosol, and cloud networks.

The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

CIRES is an internationally recognized leader in innovative environmental science and research and is located at the University of Colorado Boulder. At CIRES, more than 950 environmental science professionals work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. CIRES has partnered with NOAA since 1967, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, and more. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.

Global Monitoring Laboratory:

The Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operates long-term observing systems of atmospheric carbon, water vapor, ozone, ozone-depleting substances, aerosols, radiation and clouds, and develops new observing, analytical and modeling capabilities to enable a process understanding of past and future changes.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Assist with the assessment and analysis (and optionally installation) of new radiation measurements in a tower above the tree canopy in the Southeast United States at a new U.S. Department of Energy measurement site focused on land-atmosphere interactions, shallow cumulus clouds, and cloud-aerosol interactions. (10%)
  • Developing code, algorithms, and processes to create data products as needed (20%)
  • Develop new techniques for surface radiation measurement calibration and use. (20%)
  • Collaborate on inter- and cross-agency projects for the collection, preparation, and/or interpretation of radiation, cloud, and aerosol data-sets and analysis of their role in processes impacted by radiation such as land-atmosphere interactions, cloud radiative effects, and aerosol-cloud interactions. (25%)
  • Presentation of findings at scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals as appropriate. (25%)

Other job activities could include:

  • Assisting with collection, processing, and managing of meteorological and atmospheric data from ground-based observations, or observations on ships or aircraft.
