Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado in Boulder has an opening for a crowdsourced bathymetry data manager working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). Within NCEI, the Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics Science Division (COGS) is globally recognized as the premier repository and provider of geophysical, oceanographic, coastal, space weather and marine ecosystem data and information. NCEI is also home to the International Hydrographic Organization Data Centre for Digital Bathymetry (IHO DCDB).

CIRES is looking for a scientist with experience managing marine datasets who is excited to join an international effort to improve the collection, discovery and use of bathymetric data collected and contributed by mariners from around the world. Vessels of all types (not just traditional survey ships) can participate in increasing our knowledge of the ocean by sharing depth measurements from navigation instruments while out at sea. These data, referred to as crowdsourced bathymetry (CSB), can be used to supplement the more rigorous and scientific bathymetric coverage done by hydrographic offices, industry, and researchers around the world.

Data management at NCEI is focused on standards-based commercial data management tools, including spatially-enabled relational database management systems that drive web services. The successful candidate will participate as part of a greater team stewarding marine geophysical data, providing discovery and access for sonar data and derived scientific products, and supply customer service to global data users. This position will support voluntary mariners and scientists throughout NOAA, academia, and other data contributors throughout the international community by stewarding crowdsourced bathymetry sonar data, developing improved ways to discover, access and use these data and striving to increase collaboration and coordination for data acquisition and sharing.

This position is located at NCEI, David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, Colorado, and supports the CIRES Research Theme of Advance Modeling and Observing Systems. NCEI is a part of the US Department of Commerce, NOAA, National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. NCEI’s mission is to provide scientific stewardship of and timely access to global geophysical data from satellites and other sources to promote, protect, and enhance the Nation’s economy, security, environment, and quality of life.

The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

At CIRES, more than 950 environmental science professionals work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. CIRES has partnered with NOAA since 1967, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, and more. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) is responsible for hosting and providing access to one of the most significant archives on Earth, with comprehensive oceanic, atmospheric, and geophysical data. From the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun and from million-year-old sediment records to near real-time satellite images, NCEI is the Nation’s leading authority for environmental information. NCEI’s Boulder, Colorado office holds and preserves the Nation's treasure trove of marine geophysical data and information. This includes seafloor mapping data acquired by hydrographic, oceanographic, industry, and private vessels and platforms during surveys or while on passage.
