Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder conducts collaborative research with NOAA’s organization under NESDIS called the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). CIRES has an immediate opening for a well-qualified Software Developer. The successful applicant will be a member of a small team responsible for a challenging variety of duties related to the development of software-based solutions that meet science driven requirements. This software team is a primary contributor to the NESDIS Cloud Archive Project (NCAP). NCAP is an emerging cutting edge software solution for NOAA's environmental data archive and access. The solution is being implemented using graph database technologies and a server less application stack. Plenty of new learning and green fields development opportunities. A history of working successfully in small innovative software teams and a flexible, upbeat approach to collaborating with colleagues is a must. Applicants must possess good analytical and problem-solving skills and demonstrate experience successfully implementing and testing software applications. Applicants should also exhibit strong attention to detail and the ability to conceptualize user requirements into customer-friendly and efficient software applications. This CIRES position is co-located at the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, Colorado.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Work in a small agile focused team, developing new code as well as refactoring or re-implementing NOAA mission critical public-facing applications. Incorporate code auditing results for security and general code quality.
  • Design and complete full software development lifecycle.
  • Work with data managers and operations staff to test and validate application updates and to ensure full functionality for customers.
  • Work with an existing Agile Scrum team to incorporate best practices, standards and to identify design and code reuse.
  • Update or create application support documentation as needed.
  • Research and evaluate commercial and open-source software tools and approaches.
  • Provide engineering support to operations staff when building, deploying, configuring, and supporting public-facing systems.

  • This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305.

What We Can Offer

  • CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. 
  • The annual hiring salary range for this position is $70,000.00- $100,000.00. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  • Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require

  • Due to the requirement to access export-controlled data and information, only U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents (green cards), or other protected individuals (i.e., persons designated as an asylee, refugee, or a temporary resident under amnesty provisions) may apply to this position.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar technical field.
  • Experience as a software engineer; proven success in developing a variety of software systems with responsibility for analysis, design, implementation, and deployment tasks.
  • Experience and willingness to work in an Agile development environment.
  • Experience building micro services and rest APIs in Java and/or Python.
  • Experience building client-side user interfaces in JavaScript.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to develop asynchronous, data-driven applications incorporating multiple database systems as part of the overall application architecture.
  • Understanding of data structure, software design patterns, object-oriented analysis, and design.
  • Be comfortable and effective working in a telework environment.
  • Strong communication skills.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience with React or similar JavaScript frameworks to support single page applications.
  • Experience with multiple data query engines Elasticsearch.
  • Experience with distributed, event-driven streaming platforms.
  • Experience working in a team using agile development methods, version control, issue tracking, and continuous integration.
  • Experience with developing and troubleshooting complex software systems that run in a unix-based environment (mainly Linux).
  • Knowledge of NoSQL storage systems.
  • Knowledge of AWS cloud technologies.
