The College of Communication, Media, Design and Information (CMDI) encourages applications for a professional academic advisor! Advisors in the College of Communication, Media, Design and Information (CMDI) are committed to building collaborative student-centered relationships that support achievement of academic success, promote personal and professional development, and foster a sense of community. The position of advisor is a highly collaborative position which cultivates relationships and improve networks with numerous campus offices, including but not limited to all offices providing student support, such as the Office of the Registrar, the Bursar's, Admissions, Career Services, and so on.
Advisors in the CMDI demonstrates an enthusiastic demeanor and passion for working with students, comfortable engaging with a diverse range and large numbers of students through a broad variety of outreach methods, and approach advising with a focus on student exploration, discovery, and individual success.
This position builds relationships with undergraduate students and fosters success by providing interdisciplinary academic and developmental advising for the College of Communication, Media, Design and Information (CMDI). The position communicates and collaborates effectively with faculty and staff of the college and university to advise students about the nature and content of the curriculum and professional fields, to facilitate the development of mentoring relationships between faculty and undergraduates in the program, and to intervene effectively with students encountering academic challenges.
The position advises and engages with a caseload of approximately 350 to 425 upper division undergraduate students across all 7 departments of the college, as well as undergraduate minors programs. Academic advisors help students assess their interests, values, and academic skills. They teach students to navigate the systems, academic processes, and policies of CU Boulder, and work with students to personalize their academic paths, while offering co-curricular guidance and leading them through regular long-term planning.
In addition to one-on-one interactions, academic advisors work with students in group settings via workshops, presentations, campus events, and other activities, and maintain currency with curricular changes and opportunities to provide students with accurate and timely information and guidance.

Effective July 1, 2025, the College of Media, Communication and Information has become the College of Communication, Media, Design and Information (CMDI), incorporating the environmental design program. CMDI is at the forefront of the revolution in communication, digital technology, and design. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Undergraduate Academic Advising
- Engage in Individual and small group work with students (via scheduled appointments, walk-ins, phone and email interactions) and related administrative duties.
- Proactively contact and engage with students who have not been in for an appointment.
- Follow all advising protocols and use campus advising tools such as Buff Portal Advising.
- Maintain a multidisciplinary knowledge base.
- Assist students in planning for and making informed decisions about general degree requirements, major degree requirements, and potential career or graduate school direction.
- Help students to assess their interests, values and academic skills.
- Teach students how to navigate the systems, academic processes and policies at CU-Boulder.
- Work with students to personalize their academic path, including offering co-curricular guidance that complements their goals and leading them in regular long-term planning.
- Offer availability to students’ overall support network, including parents.
- Work with students in both one-to-one interactions and in group settings via workshops and presentations.
- Review students' progress toward graduation and advise students on their graduation status.
Outreach and Support
- Proactively track, contact, and work with special student populations (e.g., early alert, high-risk, first-generation, students who have not been in for an appointment, students in academic difficulty, high-achieving students, etc.).
- Participate in student-facing activities as assigned.
- Develop programming for students during their transition from lower-division to upper-division for advisors and curriculum.
Strategic Planning
- Plan and collaborate with the CMDI advising and coaching team, including regular team meetings, training and evaluation. This will include targeted meetings with specific constituents as well as attendance at greater organizational meetings and participation in cross-campus committees as necessary.
Professional Development
- Proactively develop knowledge of standard processes related to upper-division student transition and advising through relevant conferences, mentoring opportunities, workshops, coursework, special projects, and research.
- Share knowledge with others in CMDI, particularly advising staff, and work to help ensure that practices implemented in CMDI are aligned with that knowledge.
What You Should Know
This person will work a hybrid format, with some days a week in person and some remote.
What We Can Offer
The salary range for this position is $54,060- $61,200 annually.

What We Require
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and a minimum of one (1) year of experience working with students outside of the classroom in or related to higher education. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

- Experience with student success initiatives.
- Knowledge of and experience applying student development theory.
What We Would Like You to Have
- Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of professional related experience.
- MA degree in higher education administration or a related field and one (1) year of professional, related experience working with students in higher ed outside the classroom.
- Familiarity with common Carnegie designated research university majors, minors, and certificate programs.
