Job Summary

As Cloud Services Engineer, you will be a key member of the CU Boulder Data Lake product team, focused on architecting, developing, and operating the service.  You'll create systems and tools to support the service and establish maintenance tasks, schedules, and documentation. You will become intimately familiar with the Data Lake product, understanding all layers of the product and working to ensure service availability.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Cloud Services Engineer
  • Your primary focus will be the Data Lake product. You will be an important participant in the design, implementation, and support of the Data Lake product, create systems and tools to enable the scalability and security of the local and cloud infrastructure. 
  • You will also develop and maintain local and cloud infrastructure and applications, using code wherever applicable and automating operations wherever possible, integrate security as part of the infrastructure.   
  • You will design processes that serve product security, customer access, and multi-tenancy, while constantly improving and evolving cloud and on premise infrastructure and codifying infrastructure where possible.  
  • Work directly with customers and stakeholders to thoroughly understand ongoing business needs of the product, you will translate those needs into practical, reliable, and efficient architecture and actual implementations. 

Evaluate Strategic and Potential Technologies:  
  • Investigate new technologies that support tactical and strategic objectives. 
  • This position will also build, test, and evaluate new technologies to recommend on their applicability to key organizational and program objectives. 

Professional Development
  • Maintain proficiency and acquire new technical knowledge by reading technical journals, manuals, newsgroups and websites, attending seminars and conferences, participate in discussions with colleagues, and consult with vendors and industry peers. 
  • Identify and elect training opportunities that provide support for common service areas or future technologies.  
  • Identify personal and team opportunities for continuous improvement and development.

What You Should Know

At present, we have two identical opening for Cloud Services Engineers!

In this position, you will be part of a 24/7 on-call support rotation responsible for ensuring the availability and integrity of the product.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field from an accredited institution or a combination of education and experience as detailed below may be substituted for the degree on a year-for-year basis. 
  • 2-3 years of experience deploying products using Amazon Web Services.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to work independently and be proactive to ensure proper availability of systems/services.  
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues to solve complex problems.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to develop relationships with senior, middle management and individual contributors in the UCB campus community.
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Software development and cloud architecture experience, with particular focus on business data management, streaming and ETL systems, data lake architectures and Big Data. concepts.  
  • Experience developing cloud-native applications by combining AWS services with custom integrations.  
  • Experience with data governance and catalog solutions, such as Collibra and Apache Atlas.   
  • Experience with cloud deployment and configuration tools in AWS, such as Terraform, Ansible, and Pulumi.  
  • Experience with Linux administration.  
  • Familiarity with the Hadoop ecosystem and common Big Data analysis tools.  
  • Experience with Nagios monitoring environment.  
  • Experience building Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipelines (e.g. Jenkins).  
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies and open to adopting an agile mindset.  
  • Experience with containerization and virtualization technologies.  
  • Experience integrating on premise network resources with the public cloud.
