Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Advancement Marketing and Communications team encourages applications for a Content Writer for Internal and Outreach Communications! This position is responsible for writing and editing materials to support internal communications, executive communications and other outreach communications for the Office of Advancement at the University of Colorado Boulder. As a member of the Creative Communications and Services team for Advancement Marketing and Communications, this position will support the division’s fundraising and engagement priorities as well as the team’s work to elevate the university’s reputation, drive connection and inspire participation.

As the lead writer on internal and other outreach communications, this role will develop and implement the internal communications strategy for CU Boulder Advancement. Results include weekly and monthly internal newsletters, executive remarks from Advancement division leadership, external award applications to recognize the work of Advancement staff, internal award nominations recognizing notable CU Boulder constituents, ad hoc leadership updates to all staff and other communications as needed.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Internal Communications

  • Create and implement a comprehensive internal communications strategy for CU Boulder Advancement, including content collection and creation, publication platforms and timing, and processes for submitting, reviewing and publishing internal content.
  • Write and edit regular internal updates on behalf of the Advancement division, including weekly leadership messages, monthly newsletters and ad hoc communications as needed. Manage the production and publication process throughout.
  • Develop and manage processes for internal communications creation and distribution.
  • Review all internal communications sent to CU Boulder Advancement staff for alignment with division values and culture.
  • Review all staff communications from the Advancement Leadership Team for consistency and alignment.
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion during production of sensitive communications or announcements.
  • Identify gaps and opportunities in internal communications and make recommendations for optimization.
  • Build, schedule and send internal communications using an email marketing platform.
  • Use data to iterate and improve internal communications.
  • Submit content for University of Colorado system newsletters.

Executive Communications

  • Write and edit talking points and/or remarks for executive Advancement staff, including for external donor and alumni events, internal all-staff meetings, marketing or outreach videos, and other priority events or initiatives.
  • Collaborate with event staff to create critical communication that aligns with event goals.
  • As needed, partner with the chancellor’s speech writer to create messaging in alignment with campus priorities and initiatives.
  • Write and edit internal communications and announcements for executive Advancement staff, as part of internal communications duties.
  • Develop and manage processes for executive communications creation and distribution.

Awards and Other Outreach Communications

  • Find opportunities to celebrate outstanding work from CU Boulder Advancement via external awards and recognition; collect and edit application content from relevant team members, gain approval, submit applications and communicate outcomes.
  • See opportunities to nominate CU Boulder constituents (e.g., alumni, donors, faculty, staff, students and parents) for campus and university awards and recognition; partner with Advancement staff to prepare and submit nomination materials.
  • Announce and amplify relevant award recognitions and outcomes via internal communications and other appropriate channels.
  • Write and edit stories of impact featuring CU Boulder alumni, donors and other constituents.

What You Should Know

We anticipate this position will support a hybrid format (remote and in-person work).

What We Can Offer

  • The salary range is $53,000- $70,000 annually. Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.

What We Require

  • A Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of three years of writing experience in a professional setting, including experience with internal and/or executive communications. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

What You Will Need

  • Outstanding writing, editing and proofreading skills, including a strong and demonstrated ability to create compelling, clear and accurate content for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships.
  • Self- motivated with the ability to develop daily work objectives given project goals and deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and Internet navigation tools.
  • Fluency with Associated Press (AP) style.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Any higher education degree in communications, marketing, journalism, English or related field.
  • Five or more years of writing experience in a professional setting.
  • Experience building and sending emails through an email marketing platform.
  • Experience using data to improve internal communications.
  • Project management experience and familiarity with project management software.
  • Experience creating and implementing a comprehensive internal communications strategy.
  • Experience working with a broad spectrum of communications media, including print, web, video and other digital technologies.
