Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Advancement Marketing and Communications team encourages applications for a Content Writer for Philanthropy and Engagement! This position is responsible for researching, writing and editing compelling stories and marketing copy that advance CU Boulder’s fundraising and engagement goals for a variety of audiences and channels. This position is part of the Creative Communications and Services team for Advancement Marketing and Communications.

With an emphasis on developing customized materials for CU Boulder’s largest donors, prospects and influencers, this position helps ensure the constituent experience is inspiring, engaging and consistent throughout their time with the university. This position is also responsible for maintaining a consistent voice across central CU Boulder advancement communications, in collaboration with writers and communicators in schools, colleges and units.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Fundraising and Engagement Communications

  • Research, write and edit materials in support of CU Boulder’s fundraising and engagement priorities, including funding proposals, case statements, impact reports and stories, stewardship pieces, campaign materials, video scripts, event materials, digital content and other communications as needed.
  • Prioritize individualized communications at the principal gifts and major gifts levels, inspiring new or continued philanthropy at the highest giving tiers.
  • Write and edit marketing copy for priority events and initiatives aimed at increasing engagement among CU Boulder constituents, including alumni and donors.
  • Write and edit stories of impact featuring CU Boulder alumni, donors and other constituents.
  • Create copy for a variety of platforms, including print, digital and video.
  • Conduct research and independently incorporate changes, comments and critiques from multiple reviewers using exceptional writing and editing skills; exercise sound judgment with regard to strategy, appropriate points of emphasis and persuasive impact.
  • Describe complex academic and scientific matters in clear, persuasive language and present concise rationale for philanthropy and/or engagement.

Advancement Division Support

  • Ensure all written materials adhere to CU Boulder style and brand guidelines, as appropriate, and maintain consistency of voice.
  • Work collaboratively with advancement colleagues, as well as faculty, students, volunteers, donors and outside vendors.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of CU Boulder’s advancement goals, strategies and messages; keep up to date on campus, departmental and campus highlights. Articulate this information appropriately and effectively.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and keep a comprehensive plan of all work in progress.

What You Should Know

We anticipate this position will support a hybrid format (remote and in-person work).

What We Can Offer

  • The salary range is $53,000- 70,000 annually. Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.

What We Require

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent amount of work experience in a related area.
  • Minimum of three years of writing experience in a professional setting, including experience writing persuasive materials (e.g., proposals, white papers, case statements, marketing content or similar communications. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

What You Will Need

  • Outstanding writing, editing and proofreading skills, including a strong and demonstrated ability to create compelling, clear and accurate content for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships.
  • Self motivated with the ability to develop daily work objectives given project goals and deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and Internet navigation tools.
  • Proficiency with Associated Press (AP) style.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Any higher education degree in communications, marketing, journalism, English or related field.
  • Previous fundraising, development or advancement experience.
  • Five or more years of writing experience in a professional setting.
  • Project management experience and familiarity with project management software.
  • Experience researching and generating content through interviews, online searches and other information-gathering mechanisms.
  • Experience working with a broad spectrum of communications media, including print, web, video and other digital technologies.
