Job Summary

The Research & Innovation Office (RIO) is the central point for support and advocacy for CU Boulder’s world-class scholarship, creative work, and research. RIO seeks a Director of Core Facilities and Shared Instrumentation to join our team. We have an established tradition of providing its faculty and the surrounding scientific community access to state-of-the-art technologies – largely through a significant number of independently run core research centers. As Director, you will partner with campus, to establish a strategic plan for the university’s engagement. Curious about how you will leave your mark at CU Boulder? What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Outreach and Coordination
  • Serve as a liaison and establish a program that will incentivize participation in the coordination and support of facilities and centers. 
  • Collaborate with campus partners to spearhead onboard efforts. 
  • Coordinate with Budget & Fiscal Planning and other required campus partners for the setup and reoccurring management of centers.
  • Assist in educating faculty, students and staff in optimal use of shared facilities.
  • Identify internal and external funding sources for new instrumentation.
  • Establish and work with a Steering Committee (comprised of representative campus stakeholders, including instrumentation directors) to set priorities and metrics. The Steering Committee will provide strategic guidance on the coordinating program and help to seek consensus within the user-community.
  • Develop, advocate and publicize a program to promote CU Boulder research core capabilities internally and to industry and academic partners.
  • Survey and analyze the capacity, strengths, weaknesses, and needs of department. 
  • Identify and communicate ways in which RIO can aid and assist financially or otherwise, to improve the benefit to the research community. 
  • In partnership with lab managers and directors, own the implementation of facilities management software and liaise between campus users and the software provider, including developing a detailed understanding of software capabilities from both a technical and functional perspective.
  • Build standard methodologies, policies and procedures with the goal of improving the ability of each facility to best serve research needs campus-wide as well as in the surrounding community.
  • Generate a system to evaluate the facilities, including analysis of both fiscal data and when appropriate, standardized feedback from facility users.
  • Develop a user-friendly, searchable website to enable multiple users to identify CU Boulder resources.

What We Require

  • A Master’s degree
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing core research/shared instrumentation facilities, including substantial experience at the senior level management of scientific laboratories. 

What You Will Need

  • Proven ability to facilitate alliances with and between faculty, Colleges, Departments and/or Institutes, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to influence staff, researchers and administrators across multiple teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a strategic vision and plan and influence individuals and teams to achieve this vision. Demonstrated ability to effectively implement new programs and initiatives.
  • Ability to learn business processes and translate them into technical solution requirements and applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including grant writing.
  • An interdisciplinary background involving direct research experience. 
  • Familiarity with varied scientific instrumentation and technical expertise in one or more scientific disciplines.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • A PhD 
  • Experience in coordinating educational and scientific workshops, symposia, and courses.
  • Experience with budgeting and management of cost recovery.
  • Experience with facilities serving multiple departments, colleges, institutes and companies strongly preferred.
