Job Summary

Facilities Management is welcoming applications for a Custodian I, Floorwork Crew. This position will provide preventative and restorative maintenance to campus flooring and assist with other cleaning duties as needed. The Custodian I will also provide custodial, recycling and waste, and snow removal services. This position is required to operate a ¾-ton box van to transport equipment and materials in the performance of all essential duties. 

This position is an essential services role and is required to respond to after-hours emergencies, and report to work for regular assigned shift during emergency campus closures to assist with getting campus re-opened.

Who We Are

Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for the overall physical development and maintenance of the campus. The mission of the department is to provide a safe physical environment that promotes the advancement and transfer of knowledge.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Carpet Care
  • Complete extraction of carpets to clean floors, upholstery furniture and fabric walls.
  • Move furniture and equipment and follow safety precautions and equipment procedures to complete assignments. 
  • Use specialized ride equipment such as "Readyspace" technology equipment/extractor machines (ride-on models, pulled or walk-behind) and handheld carpet spotter machines.
Restorative Hard Floor Care
  • Strip/scrub, wax, and polish hard surface floors in accordance with the established standards/guidelines within Facilities Operations and EH&S regulations, procedures, and safety guidelines. All safety precautions must be followed, including PPE and safety barriers, and caution tape must be utilized. This work may include spray buffing and high speed burnishing on occasion.
  • Perform duties with the use of HEPA filter wet/dry vacuums, buffers/scrubbers, auto-scrubbers, flat mop wax applicators, backpack wax applicators, mops, and buckets.
Furniture, Equipment, Supply Moving
  • Load and unload furniture, equipment, and supplies.
  • Set up tables and chairs in classrooms, conference rooms, class labs, and offices.
Set-Up Work and Room Preparation 
  • Prepare floor surfaces for refinishing or extracting. This may include vacuuming, sweeping and mopping of floors.
  • Move equipment (which may be physical and strenuous work). This may involve a variety of general tasks and general labor, including the use of specialized equipment; move classroom and common space furniture in preparation for floor work and return items after treatment is complete.
  • All laboratory floors must first be swept, then mopped with plain clear water before applying the stripper to floors. All safety procedures and precautions must be taken, including proper use of PPE, before starting any work.
  • Clean flooring using HEPA filter vacuums, backpack vacuums, mops, and buckets, as well as floor auto-scrubbers.
Snow/Ice Removal and De-Icer Application
  • Remove all snow and ice as necessary from walks and stairs. Apply de-icer as needed to keep the entry open and safe. This includes the use of snow shovels, ice scrapers, and buckets of ice-melt. 
Equipment Maintenance and Cleaning, Emergency Cleaning, Team Cleaning
  • Clean and perform minor preventative cleaning maintenance on all custodial equipment to keep it in proper working order.
  • Perform minor, repetitive, simple repairs and maintenance on equipment or buildings. Duties may include the operation and troubleshooting of equipment and the use of tools.
  • All buckets and hydro- and HEPA-vacuums are to be emptied daily.
  • Custodial workstation(s) must be clean and well stocked with supplies and materials required to perform work in a safe manner; add water to floor drains as needed. Report the need for building maintenance to area coordinator or Facilities Management Operations Control Center when necessary.
  • Perform emergency cleaning, water pick-ups as needed. Participate in the “Eyes and Ears Program” of the University to help promote safety at the university. Serve on "Emergency Response Teams" as needed.
  • Perform minor repetitive repairs and on-site maintenance of equipment as required.
  • This essential services position is responsible for responding to other duties as assigned on an as-needed basis. Position may be temporarily moved to another cluster to assist in Team Cleaning (regular routine cleaning of campus buildings) as workloads demand or due to staffing shortages in other clusters/areas.
Driving Responsibilities
  • The use of a ¾ ton cube van (CMV certification) is required to complete most assignments, including moving/transporting furniture, equipment, and supplies to and from the job site, returning to shop for items as well as for repairs/maintenance. Must report all required equipment needing repairs to area coordinator. All drivers are to utilize the buddy system when parking or backing van, which means two other employees are to be outside the vehicle (one in the front and one in the rear) to assist with safely parking/backing vehicles into a dock or parking space. Must be familiar with the operation of said vehicle to safely assist the driver.

The shift for this position will be Monday through Thursday, 3:30 pm - 2:00 am.

What We Can Offer

The starting salary for this position is $13.37 per hour or $27,268 per year plus a 7.5% shift differential.

What We Require

  • Must pass DOT physical before starting work as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) certification within the first 90 days of employment required to operate vehicles essential to position.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs repeatedly, push/pull loads exceeding 100lbs.
  • Ability to work weekend and shift work for special events, projects or scheduling issues when required.

  • Current Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) certification.
