Job Summary

The Housing Facilities Services (HFS) department at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applicants for the Custodian I position! This position works with the HFS team to clean and maintain facilities on the CU Boulder campus. Duties include but are not limited to cleaning and disinfecting showers and bathrooms, sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors, and removing ice and snow from walks, steps and entrances. The Custodian I position will work in high traffic areas, interacting with students, faculty, staff, and guests on a regular basis.

Who We Are

Housing Facilities Services (HFS) is a comprehensive facility management operation that provides around-the-clock support to over 10,000 residents and 20,000 conference guests annually. Services include maintenance, repair, renovation, project management, capital construction, housekeeping, and grounds-keeping operations. HFS has approximately 190 full-time employees, as well as approximately 80 part-time and student staff, who all strive to give residents the best living experience possible.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Detail Specialist: 17%

  • Empty all waste and recycling receptacles and dispose of trash and recyclable materials in the appropriate containers.
  • Dust and/or wash windowsills, blinds, woodwork, doors, furniture, elevator walls and control panels.
  • Dust overhead light fixtures, pipes, and all unobstructed horizontal and vertical surfaces.
  • Wash door glass, blackboard frames, chalk trays and erasers.
  • Wash blackboards and whiteboards in classrooms as needed.

Vacuum Specialist: 17%

  • Use backpack vacuum to thoroughly clean all floor surfaces and stairwells, including entryway mats and elevator door tracks.
  • Vacuum upholstery as needed.
  • Vacuum erasers and chalk trays in classrooms and conference rooms.

Restroom Specialist: 17%

  • Clean restrooms using specialized “touch free” restroom cleaning system.
  • Use tools such as squeegees, brushes, and high-pressure sprays to clean all bathroom surfaces.
  • Clean and disinfect fixtures, mirrors, countertops, partitions, sinks, toilets, urinals, and showers.
  • Pick up debris, clean, and disinfect bathroom floors.
  • Vacuum up dirt, debris, and water from floors. Use blowers to dry when needed.
  • Empty all bathroom waste receptacles including feminine waste receptacles.
  • Restock all supplies daily.

Utility Specialist: 17%

  • Clean entrances of facilities daily: sweep, empty ashtrays, clean entry doors, clean out leaves and cobwebs.
  • Remove graffiti, spot clean carpets, and remove gum from floors as needed.
  • Extract entryway carpeted hallways once per week.
  • Mop all hard surface floors regularly, and spot mop spills daily.
  • Assist with restocking closets as needed.
  • Scrub and disinfect drinking fountains.

Snow Removal: 5%

  • Provide a safe and healthy environment for students, staff, and visitors by removing ice and snow with shovels, ice scrapers, or salt from outside walks, steps and entrances.

Equipment Maintenance: 5%

  • Clean and perform minor maintenance on custodial equipment to keep it in proper working order, and report all equipment needing repairs to the supervisor.
  • Empty and clean all vacuums, buckets, Kaivacs, and hydro- and hepa-vacs daily.
  • Keep the custodial workstations clean and well stocked with supplies and materials needed to perform the work in the assigned area.
  • Identify and report updates to building floor plans and maintenance problems such as burned-out bulbs or tubes, running water, and plugged drains to supervisor.

Emergency and Miscellaneous Work: 22%

  • Perform initial emergency clean up including water and/or debris.
  • Extract carpeted floors and upholstered furniture with disinfectant.
  • Clean upholstery by hand or with extractor.
  • Move or assist in the moving of heavy furniture.
  • Replace dirty linen with clean linen and make the beds for specific events.
  • Assist with the stripping and finishing of hard surface floors.
  • Participate in the “Eyes and Ears Program” and "Emergency Response Teams" as needed.
  • Any duties assigned by the supervisor to fit the needs of the business.

What You Should Know

  • The shift for this position is 7:00 am - 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

  • Please be aware that environmental services is considered essential services. This is not a remote position.
  • Interviews will be in person on the CU Boulder campus. Applicants are responsible for all expenses involved in traveling for interviews.

What We Can Offer

  • The hourly pay is $15.45 per hour, equivalent to $32,136.00 annually.
