Job Summary

Student Affairs Information Technology at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for a Data Warehouse & Integrations Engineer! In this role, you will develop logical and physical data models to support business intelligence, reporting, and integrations for units within Student Affairs. You will be tasked with understanding our partners’ goals and developing the data structures to support a successful implementation. After gaining in-depth understanding of the challenges and needs of each department, the Data Warehouse & Integrations Engineer develops solutions via the data warehouse, analytical data models, custom applications, and self-service business intelligence/reporting tools. The goals of this position are to create data, reporting, and integration solutions that enhance the student experience, improve operations, and enable data-driven decision-making across the Division of Student Affairs.

The Data Warehouse & Integrations Engineer serves as a technical project lead and architect for data collection projects that feed into the data warehouse or real-time business intelligence solutions. This includes, but is not limited to, designing and developing web applications using Power Platform, designing and building custom applications for data that is not captured in a source system, and creating new databases. Key to this role is the ability to work collaboratively with team members across the Division of Student Affairs and provide training, guidance, and solving for existing BI implementations. Along with building and maintaining the data warehouse, this position has oversight of the development and maintenance of data integrations, creating and deploying SSIS packages to migrate data between disparate systems, both within and external to CU.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Data Warehouse & Integrations Engineer

  • Design, build, implement and maintain the data warehouse and self-service business intelligence reporting solutions.
  • Participate in the gathering of functional requirements and offer insight into the functional design process.
  • Ensure that technical requirements are met and are deployable.
  • Write SQL queries to create views, tables, functions, and stored procedures for the data warehouse.
  • Serve as technical lead for projects to integrating new data into the data warehouse.
  • Investigate the architecture and relationships of relevant databases in order to integrate into the data warehouse and analytical data models.
  • Develop and maintain systems for keeping raw data, metadata, and other data assets secure and accessible.
  • Perform QA and testing tasks to support data warehouse improvements.
  • Create and maintain data documentation.
  • Create technical standards for business intelligence projects.
  • Optimize queries and stored procedures to improve database performance.

Data Collection & ETL Processes

  • Design, build, implement and maintain data integrations and data collection applications.
  • Develop and maintain user interfaces for maintaining ad-hoc data.
  • Build custom applications to support business intelligence needs, such as mobile/tablet apps using Power Platform and other CRUD applications.

Business Analysis

  • Propose changes in business processes to improve data collection and management.
  • Collaborate with teams within and external to Student Affairs in order to integrate systems, and provide insights and suggestions for improving data flow and quality.
  • Develop and maintain existing system-to-system interfaces using SSIS.
  • Responsible for safeguarding files and data against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction, or disclosure.
  • Serves as a member of the Student Affairs IT team and works collaboratively across the team to provide the services, support and solutions to the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Working nights and weekends may be required in case of IT emergencies such as infrastructure failures, outages, security concerns or data issues.

  • This is a predominantly remote position that may be asked to come to campus for required in-person events or meetings.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. OPT visas are not able to be considered at this time as well.

  • The salary range for this position is $100,600 to $113,644 annually. Onboarding assistance is available within Student Affairs division guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • 5-years of experience with data warehouse design and development. This experience should include:
    • Developing business intelligence solutions with Microsoft’s SQL Server suite of data tools, including SSAS, SSIS, and SSRS.
    • Managing and completing projects (full life-cycle project planning and implementation).

What You Will Need

  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-term goals, establish priorities, and organize resources.
  • Ability to think strategically and relate architectural decisions/recommendations to business needs and departmental culture.
  • Knowledge of how to assess the performance of data solutions, how to diagnose performance problems, and tools used to monitor and tune performance.
  • Highly proficient in T-SQL script development writing stored procedures, views, user defined functions, etc.
  • Strong understanding of ETL concepts, architecture, development methodologies, deployment processes and standard practices.
  • Proficiency with SFTP processes and data encryption at rest and in transit.
  • Familiarity with BI tools such as PowerBI.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess security standards and ensure that workflows and data exchanges are handled according to recommended security practices.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Masters Degree in a related field.
  • Experience performing as an effective leader and teammate, and recognizing and resolving challenges through diplomacy.
  • Experience collaborating with vendors and consultants, especially managing projects and software.
  • Experience designing data marts or cubes using SSAS Tabular and PowerBI.
  • Experience using RedGate SQL Toolbelt, Source Control, etc.
  • Experience using ZappySys SSIS Power Pack or similar.
  • Experience with REST APIs.
