Job Summary

Reporting to the LASP Director, the Director, Finance and Operations (DD-FO) is the senior leader responsible for furthering the LASP science mission by providing coordination and support to individual programs and across a number of business areas. LASP is a large, multidisciplinary research institute located in the rapidly developing CU-Boulder East Campus. The Lab is seeking a highly motivated individual who is passionate about its science mission and enjoys working in a stimulating academic environment.

The DD-FO serves as the executive administrative officer for LASP. The DD-FO manages budgetary, financial, administrative, and human resource activities for the Lab and advises LASP’s other senior leadership on issues in these areas. The DD-FO implements internal LASP policy and provides general administrative oversight.

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

This is a critical role in LASP’s continued success and growth. The role is accountable for the following:

  • Responsible for the operations of the Laboratory in support of its scientific and technical goals and the direction established by the Director.
  • Design and implement research business strategies, plans and procedures.
  • Set comprehensive goals for performance improvements and growth with emphasis on optimizing the effectiveness and efficiency of the business of research.
  • Establish policies that promote and support institutional culture and vision.
  • Champion strategic research and workforce initiatives to enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, and innovation.
  • Modernize and support LASP technology, and support implementation of processes and systems that optimize efficiencies and cost effectiveness within LASP.
  • Oversee daily operations of LASP, and enable the support and sustainment required of the LASP research divisions.
  • Lead LASP members (Faculty, Staff, and student employees) to encourage maximum performance and dedication.
  • Evaluate laboratory performance by analyzing and interpreting data and metrics.
  • Assist Director and LASP Business Committee in developing and implementing research proposals and initiatives.
  • Manage business relationships with CU Boulder, CU system, private-sector, and government partners.
  • Translate LASP’s research strategies into administrative strategic and operational plans.
  • Provide reporting to the LASP Director, provides oversight for the day-to-day management of the LASP administrative function;
  • Provide strategic advice to the LASP Director and Business Committee regarding financial and other administrative-related issues. Operate as an internal business consultant to create and maintain a strong performance culture for the Lab.
  • Provide financial oversight of LASP projects and grants, with responsibility for compliance with all federal, state and University requirements. Ensure that the LASP Business Committee, principal investigators and project managers are provided with current, accurate status information and forecasts.
  • Develop and manages LASP annual operating budget. Ensures internal reporting is timely and accurate. Ensures internal procurements are appropriate to budget and in compliance with University guidelines.
  • Provide oversight of business management, financial guidance, and oversight of the Laboratory's Indirect Cost Return (ICR) funding from the University in coordination with the Director and LASP Business Committee (BC).
  • Oversee financial, human resources, contract, compliance, property, technology control, facilities, infrastructure sustainment, procurement, travel, security, safety, general office activities, and other service and support functions as required for LASP. I’m
  • Serve as member of LASP Business Committee, the senior management group that provides guidance to the Lab. Facilitate committee agendas and activities.
  • Serve as interface and participate in University activities, as delegated (including to the Office of the Provost, Office, Research and Innovation Office, Legal, Office of Contracts and Grants, Campus Controller Office, Facilities Maintenance, Real Estate Services, and other research support organizations and institutes.   • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for business strategy to the University in support of the University’s broader research goals.
  • Serve as a delegated Empowered Official for Export Control compliance.
  • Represent the Director and LASP as required.

What You Should Know

  • The Deputy Director must be a U.S. Person. Eligibility for a high-level security clearance is preferred but not required. The Deputy Director will embrace the values of a mission-driven non-profit organization.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $185,000.00 - $225,000.00. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 200% matching for the first 5% contributed with immediate vesting. Relocation assistance is available per institute guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 12+ years of experience with increasing management responsibility in finance/accounting.
  • Significant experience with government contracting and/or procurement.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience working in research/academic environments.
  • Experience with University financial processes and procedures.
  • Aerospace industry knowledge and/or experience as Chief Financial Officer of a small firm.
  • Experience managing administrative areas including Human Resources, Facilities, Contracts and Grants compliance, and/or purchasing.
