Job Summary

The Digital Accessibility Office at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Digital Accessibility Services Coordinator! This role will coordinate and provide support for a variety of accessibility operations and services. Primarily, this will include administering the day-to-day operations of the campus post-production captioning service. Initially, this position will fulfill all post-production captioning requests using vendor services, however, it is anticipated that by Spring 2025, the Digital Accessibility Services Coordinator will begin supervising student employees who are creating post-production captions!

To be successful in this role, an individual must have strong service coordination, communication, attention to detail, and customer service skills. This includes the ability to supervise multiple requests with different timelines, respond to requests in a timely manner, and supervise a team of student employees.

Who We Are

CU Boulder’s Digital Accessibility Office (DAO) is a group with a strong reputation in the higher education community for quality work in digital accessibility. DAO works to improve the accessibility of the digital campus environment and increase opportunities for participation in the digital life of the university for individuals with disabilities. DAO is part of the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and has ongoing support from university and system level leadership. CU Boulder is a flagship university with a broad portfolio of pioneering projects in instruction, technology, and academic support and the Digital Accessibility Services Coordinator will have opportunities to collaborate with other experts in DAO and departments across campus (Disability Services, other units within OIT, the ADA coordinator’s office, etc.).

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Post-Production Captioning:

  • Ensure all captioning requests and inquiries are processed and fulfilled in a timely manner, working with Disability Services and the ADA Office, as needed. This will include the fulfillment of post-production captioning accommodations for students.
  • Partner with the Digital Accessibility Services Manager to develop and implement training, processes, and workflows for student employees (Captioning Specialists) to create post-production captions.
  • Supervise Captioning Specialists, including hiring, training, allocating daily tasks and workloads, coordinating schedules, and ensuring work quality, with support from the Digital Accessibility Services Manager, as needed.
  • Maintain an understanding of vendor service offerings, prices, and captioning integrations.
  • Support efforts to reduce captioning costs through vendor evaluations, research, and testing.
  • Support and educate the campus community about captioning responsibilities, tools, and workflows through documentation, training, and consultations.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance with DAO-related project and operational work, accessibility tools, and services, as needed.
  • Partner with Digital Accessibility Services Manager to ensure Qualtrics accessibility exception requests are reviewed and fulfilled.

The salary range is $56,000 - $64,500.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. A combination of education and related experience can substitute for the Bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
  • One year of experience in any of the following:
    • Captioning management.
    • Digital accessibility consultation, training, or remediation work.
    • Customer support in an information technology field.
  • Experience creating post-production captions and working with captioning vendors.

What You Will Need

  • Strong writing skills with attention to style and grammar.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, and demonstrable ability to work with a variety of abilities, personalities, professions, and roles.
  • Organizational and time management skills; ability to supervise and manage a variety of requests or cases simultaneously.
  • Ability to learn to do technical work involving a variety of file types and software.
  • Ability to provide customer support in a thoughtful, courteous, and timely way.
  • Ability to translate technical issues to non-technical audiences and communicate information at the appropriate level for the recipient’s knowledge.

  • Experience managing student employees.
  • Familiarity with captioning quality standards.
  • Familiarity with current WCAG standards and accessibility principles.
  • Experience with coordinating and completing meticulous, time-sensitive work.
  • Familiarity with PDF accessibility remediation.
