Job Summary

The School of Education is accepting applications for the Director of Elementary Education position! In the School of Education, our faculty, researchers, staff, and students support our mission to both conduct and disseminate excellent research and educate students making a transformative difference with and in schools and communities. The Director of Elementary Education is an intellectual leader and lead administrator of the Elementary Education major, the largest undergraduate major in the School of Education. The Director plays a critical role in ensuring the quality, consistency, and continuous improvement of the Elementary Education program while fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment for students and faculty alike.

Work with a team, lead individually, craft program policies, and manage coordination, research, design, and writing tasks.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The position involves a blend of leadership, program coordination, and student support responsibilities aimed at ensuring the successful operation and continuous improvement of the Elementary Education (ELED) program.

Student Support

  • Develop and be responsible for student support plans across all four years, with a primary focus on Years 3 and 4.
  • Ensure that student support plans include detailed records of support activities and students’ progress toward expectations of the program and the students’ specific area of focus.
  • Communicate and collaborate with team members involved in the support plans, often including the Director of Field Experiences, Field Coach, Instructors and Advising.
  • Gather documentation regarding student challenges and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Facilitate communication processes and adherence to established protocols in coordination with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate and Teacher Education, Director of Field Experiences, and other relevant roles.
  • Enact and support student assessment policies and practices, in collaboration with Director of Field Experiences. This includes attending to student progress in key program benchmarks such as entry into student teaching and recommendation for licensure.
  • Collaborate with Advising and with Admissions to review potential admissions and transfer students and make recommendations.
  • Participate in continued improvement/refinement of practices and policies with Advising and Admissions for assessing admissions and transfer applications.

Scheduling and Staffing

  • Coordinate the scheduling of courses and assignment of instructors
  • Coordinate doctoral student teaching and field coaching appointments.
  • Design, implement, and manage a system for hiring and assigning field coaches and lecturers, including an application and selection process, in collaboration with Associate Dean of Undergraduate and Teacher Education.

Teaching and Seminar Leadership

  • Lead practicum seminars, student teaching seminars, and/or professional development sessions for field coaches, as part of the Elementary Education curriculum and supporting practicum placements specific to the ELED program.
  • Provide support for doctoral student instructors in the ELED program through monthly group mentoring meetings and individual support as needed.

Accreditation and Program Improvement

  • Lead accreditation efforts for the ELED program in collaboration with other teacher education program chairs, the AD of Undergraduate/Teacher Education, and the Director of Field Experience.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Field Experiences on the program improvement cycle, including implementing recommendations from reauthorization processes and integrating with internal program improvement processes.
  • Provide input on data collection tools used for both program improvement (e.g., focus groups, surveys to mentors and candidates; exit surveys) and candidate performance (e.g., mentor surveys; field coach observation tools). Serve as final decision maker on documentation tools to evaluate candidate performance for teacher licensure, with approval- and in collaboration with - Associate Dean of Undergraduate and Teacher Education.
  • Communicate to instructors and other team members trends in program improvement data.

Program Leadership and Planning

  • Plan and lead ELED program meetings, incorporating professional learning, policy discussions, and student support strategies as needed.
  • Coordinate and supervise program-wide events, including admission events, student orientation, and special topics workshops during student teaching.
  • Coordinate the curricula and scope and sequence across courses and years of the program to maintain program coherence, in collaboration with program faculty.
  • Lead the course proposal or revision process as needed, including presentations to the curriculum committee, in collaboration with program faculty.
  • Work cooperatively with the faculty to establish and implement processes that ensure effective instruction and adherence to the program’s guiding principles
  • Create and sustain structures and routines for formal and informal peer observations of all Elementary Education faculty and instructors (with Associate Dean of Faculty as resource).

Resource Development and Communication

  • Create, organize, and maintain shared documents, materials, and resources for the ELED program, in collaboration with Advising, the Director of Field Experiences, or others as relevant.
  • Distribute and communicate program resources with ELED personnel and relevant partners.
  • Manage program milestones and target dates through consistent communication with collaborators.

Administrative Responsibilities and Other

  • Collaborate on updates to the course catalog in coordination with the Assistant Dean of Academic Planning and Programs.
  • Provide input on the Teacher Education, Field Experience, and School of Education (SOE) student handbooks as needed.
  • Provide input on areas of SOE policy related to the Elementary Education program
  • Review and provide input on the School of Education intranet sites and website for information pertaining to the Elementary Education program.
  • Attend meetings with other SOE and program leaders, including the AD for UG and TE; TE Leadership Team; Director of Field Experiences; monthly Faculty meetings; and other relevant meetings that may arise.
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities, as assigned. 

What You Should Know

  • This role follows a hybrid work schedule, requiring a minimum of 18 hours per week in the office.
  • The position operates on a Monday through Friday schedule, with core hours from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM to ensure team collaboration and availability.
  • The total workweek consists of 40 hours, with the remaining hours completed remotely as needed.

What We Can Offer

The starting salary for this position is $76,602 - $105,000.

What We Require

  • Doctoral degree in Education (PhD or EdD) or equivalent.
  • Professional experience in the field of teacher learning and elementary teacher education.
  • Experience teaching courses in elementary teacher education.
  • 3+ years of teaching experience in U.S. elementary schools or equivalent.

  • Proven ability to collect, analyze and assess data related to student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
  • Experience working with faculty and interacting with parents of college students.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point), and experience with other technologies such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Canvas, Qualtrics, Google Workspace, etc.
