Job Summary

The Anderson Language and Technology Center (ALTEC) at the University of Colorado Boulder welcomes applications for an Educational Consultant.  ALTEC is a service unit that supports the language learning community at the University of Colorado Boulder and in the state of Colorado. ALTEC’s mission is to broaden and deepen cultural understanding through innovative approaches to language learning and teaching. This position serves as the expert on Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and manages the center’s large-scale research project, as well as organizes workshops on instructional design and technology integration. The Educational Consultant additionally coordinates several education services.

The Anderson Language and Technology Center (ALTEC) is part of the University of Colorado Boulder. We are a service unit that supports the language learning community at the University and in the state of Colorado. Our offices and classrooms are located on the main Boulder campus on the south side of the Quad in the Hellems Arts and Sciences building. ALTEC has been making language learning increasingly interactive for nearly thirty years and serves as a model for other universities seeking to update their language programs for the twenty-first century. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

SLA Research Project 
  • Serve as the expert on Second Language Acquisition and manage the center’s innovative large-scale research project that explores a new teaching model. 
  • Through cross-campus collaboration, foster partnerships with other offices such as language and culture departments, Education Abroad, Museum of Natural History, and Norlin Library, as well external businesses, on designing and implementing a for-credit course or other integrated course deliverables. 
  • The Educational Consultant is additionally responsible for exploring and securing grant funding as well as publicizing and sharing the final product.
 
Teaching Workshops 
  • Design and present workshops to faculty and graduate students as well as instructors from the community on instructional design and technology integration in the language classroom as part of the Language Institute. 
  • The content of these workshops is driven in part by the SLA research project. 
  • Responsible for preparing workshops and coordinating logistics, such as room reservations and marketing, in collaboration with the Data & Digital Communications Manager and Program Assistant.
 
Educational Services
  • In conjunction with the Events & Services Coordinator, develop a tutoring program and other educational services or programs for the center. Explore collaboration with existing CU tutoring centers and language departments to provide language tutoring.
  • Tutoring program development will include designing 1:1 and group tutoring schedules, instructing tutors on best practices, creating intake and exit procedures including surveys, and crafting data reports to inform decisions related to the tutoring program. 
  • Additionally, in conjunction with the Events & Services Coordinator, oversee the process and interview for students wishing to take language courses through the Modified Foreign Language Program. 
    • The MFLP currently offers Spanish language courses designed with a multisensory teaching approach that is customized to support each student’s challenge areas, with the possibility of expanding to other languages.
    • Also responsible for informing campus partners about these educational services and programs.
 
Placement & Proficiency Exams 
  • Facilitate updates with language faculty and the Office of Information Technology to the placement exams used to determine language level for for-credit courses. 
  • Coordinate language proficiency exams for heritage speaker students to satisfy the CU language requirement.
 
Other Tasks as Assigned 
  • Assist director and unit staff with special tasks as assigned.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 1 year of project management experience including a strong background in SLA research, instructional design and/or technology integration.
  • Formal training and experience in teaching a language, or teaching others about instructional design/technology integration.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the Bachelor's Degree requirement.
