Job Summary

The Campus Controller’s Office at the University of Colorado Boulder is now welcoming applications for a Financial Analyst Intern. The Financial Analyst Intern will further develop knowledge and skill required to complete the process of Sponsored Research Award Management; and will work closely with peers within CCO and with the Office of Contracts and Grants, principal investigators, and awarding agency personnel in the fiscal management of awards. The intern will learn to provide analysis of award expenditures to ensure that all expenses are in line with the contract terms, federal, state, agency, and University rules and regulations, analyze cash position of awards, prepare fiscal reports for awarding agency, prepare accounting entries, correct attributes in the finance system, and develop skills necessary to move to the professional accountant level. This position may also involve cross-training across other areas of CCO to further develop accounting skills that are necessary for the success of the university.

Who We Are

The Campus Controller's Office maintains and supports the university's fiscal responsibility through accurate financial accounting and reporting and in compliance with laws, regulations, policies/procedures and contract requirements for sponsored projects. We provide oversight, assistance and training in financial stewardship for the Boulder campus.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

 Process Excellence (identifying, improving, maintaining processes, including metrics)
  • Follow processes to be in compliance with all Federal, State, University and campus rules and regulations.
  • Review and analyze all new award agreements and subsequent amendments from assigned agencies for terms and conditions, financial reporting requirements, and ensure accuracy and completeness of financial systems record.
  • Monitor assigned project accounts, analyze typical expenditures as well as atypical situations, resolve any issues
  • Analyze cash position, process requests for funds through individual sponsor required payment systems, resolve cash on hand when necessary.
  • Prepare and submit accurate financial reports to funding agencies in a timely manner; provide financial reports to internal users as requested.
  • Accomplish other tasks as assigned.

  • Provide consulting and guidance to CCO personnel on the administration of sponsored research funds, business processes, and the use of university financial systems.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with sponsors and CCO staff.
  • Insight to navigation of website resources; including Uniform Guidance, sponsor specific sites, and university web pages.
 
People Development (developing, retaining, recognizing our staff)
  • Seek opportunities for professional development and training for self.
  • Provide suggestions for growth and development of CCO units.
 
Infrastructure Enhancement (technology requirements, system upgrades and brand identity)
  • Provide input, and assist with system upgrades and implementations.
  • Identify areas of improvement within University financial systems.

What You Should Know

This Intern position is a full-time, 12-month appointment.  If hired into the position, the appointment will not last beyond 12 months.  Near the end of the 12 month Internship, your performance will be evaluated and you may be considered for a permanent, full-time position within the Campus Controller’s Office.  However, there is no guarantee that a permanent, full-time position will be available.

What We Require

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field.

What You Will Need
