Job Summary

The Housing Facilities Services team with CU Boulder is accepting applications for a Fire Suppression Technician! This is a specialist position responsible for the installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and proper functioning of new and existing fire suppression systems. These systems are critical to safeguarding lives and property against fire hazards in residence halls, apartment buildings, commons buildings, and shop areas. This role requires a deep understanding of functioning alarm systems, wet and dry fire sprinkler systems and is up to date on the latest fire suppression technology and plumbing/fire life safety codes. This position may work independently but is an integral part of a work unit dedicated to fire life safety.

Housing Facilities Services (HFS) is a comprehensive facility management operation that provides around-the-clock support to over 10,000 residents and 20,000 conference guests annually. Services include maintenance, repair, renovation, project management, capital construction, housekeeping and grounds-keeping operations. HFS has approximately 190 full-time employees and approximately 80 part-time and student staff, who all strive to give residents the best living experience possible.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Functional Testing, Code Competency, Documentation
  • Perform functional testing, inspections, and certifications of existing fire suppression systems including, but not limited to water flow and tamper switches, pre-action systems and components, dry pipe systems and components, air compressors, back flow systems and components, and other related systems and components. 
  • Responsible for documenting all deficiencies, changes, and problems. 
  • Maintain fire alarm and fire suppression system records for all systems on campus including, but not limited to: record drawings, testing results, valve inspections, building inspections, back flow certification, maintenance and repair reports, and technical reference materials on a per building fire alarm/suppression system basis. 
  • Advise all relevant parties of functional systems failures or problems for securing future funding.
Repair and Maintenance, Code Compliance, Work Scheduling
  • Perform maintenance, installations, and modifications on fire sprinkler systems to ensure the normal operation of the campus fire sprinkler systems. 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues efficiently to minimize downtime and ensure continued operation.
  • Repair tamper switches, water flow switches, piping, air compressors, back flow valve components, sprinkler heads, test valves and all other inherent components of fire suppression systems. 
  • Work with campus partners on scheduling and communicate the status of the building's systems.
Knowledge of Trade, Systems, Campus Standards & Protocols
  • Inspect contractor installations of fire suppression systems, as well as coordinate system deactivation to allow for contractor work on existing systems
  • Assist with interconnection between existing and new suppression systems including the fire alarm control panel deactivation.
  • Notify proper parties for short-term outages, following a pre-agreed upon protocol.
  • Enforce CU Boulder standards, contractual requirements, work procedures, and codes.
  • Participate in CU Boulder's acceptance decision for the final fire alarm and suppression system test on all new contractor installed systems.
Project Support and Inter-departmental Collaboration
  • Collaborate with CU Boulder project planners, engineers, consultants, and building occupants on projects, and participates in contract document and shop drawing reviews. 
  • Aid in developing and editing UCB Standards, fire alarm, and suppression procedures and policies.
Administrative and Other Duties as Assigned
  • Maintain and improve knowledge of technical competency on fire suppression systems.
  • Instruct and advise CU Boulder campus entitiessuch as faculty, staff and emergency response personnel on facilities component improvements and theory and operation of all fire suppression system devices.
  • Complete material issuance requests and purchase requests to procure any material needed to support the position's work load. 
  • Include closing comments when closing work orders and ensure any repair work orders are created. 
  • Work collaboratively with other HFS and trades work units and train them on pertinent systems when needed.

What You Should Know

  • This position operates University vehicles and requires an active Driver's License in good standing.
  • Work Schedule will be 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday Thru Friday.

The annual hiring range for this position is $70,000-$74,000.

What We Require

  • Three (3) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position, or equivalent combination of related education and/or formalized apprenticeship
  • NICET II and Backflow Protection Assembly Tester Certification required (or obtained within 12 months).

What We Would Like You to Have

  • A current City of Denver Installer/Inspector License or ability to obtain withing first 12 months.
  • Experience in an institutional or campus setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of NFPA 13, 14, 15, 20, 25.
  • Basic knowledge of fire alarm systems wiring and systems operation as it relates to fire alarm system functions.
  • Current Backflow Protection Assembly Tester Certification (ASSE preferred). Applicant must attain certification within 12 months of hire if they do not currently possess it.
  • Five Seven years of experience in fire sprinkler installation, testing, and maintenance.
