Job Summary

The Department of Anthropology encourages applications for a Front Desk Assistant! This role provides reception, technical, and clerical support for the department’s administrative office in addition to providing assistance to the Chair, Associate Chairs, faculty, and staff. This position handles a large volume of phone calls and emails, and assists faculty members, staff, students and the public by providing accurate and informative answers. This position leads all aspects of departmental communication including our website and publicity, social media, newsletters, and department media. By supporting both operations and communications, this position serves as the nexus between staff, faculty, undergraduate program and graduate programs.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Operational and Administrative Support

  • Provide faculty members, students, and visitors with general information, answers calls, and distributes the department email.
  • Provide clerical support to department administrators, faculty and staff with tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets, document prep for promotion files, designing and creating office procedures, forms and records tracking systems, and copying. Build and update department forms as necessary.
  • Manage the filing system, maintain department list serves, publish office hours, maintain faculty and student mailboxes. Receive and distribute all US and campus mail sent to the department.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of conference rooms, classrooms, and AV equipment. Manage the department calendar and online facility reservation requests.
  • Supervise 1-2 student employees.


  • Maintain department website.
  • Coordinate social media and serve as the primary account holder for social media accounts. Communicate with necessary partners to maintain accounts, resolve service issues, and secure new followers. Post new content (student recruitment, admissions, donor development and cultivation, department accomplishments) to accounts.
  • Create special event fliers, handouts, and invitations for departmental events, seminars, visiting speakers, etc.
  • Work with A&S Student Recruitment to create outreach to prospective students and families.
  • Lead department Tru-Digital electronic signage system including crafting content, managing event notifications, and troubleshooting system with system vendor.
  • Publish monthly department newsletter.

Event Support

  • Provide assistance for department events that occur throughout the year.

This is a part-time, 50% appointment.

What We Require

  • Must be a current Colorado resident.
  • Two years of general clerical or administrative experience. Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to work independently and with responsibility for initiating and completing tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with professionals, administrators, and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of a variety of formats, styles, and techniques for publishing materials.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution in a field related to the work assigned.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in website support and/or management.
  • Experience using desktop and web publishing software.
