What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Investigate hydroxyl and peroxy radical (OH, HO2, RO2) chemistry pertaining to the GreaterNY Oxidant, Trace gas, Halogen and Aerosol Airborne Mission (GOTHAAM) study.
  • Responsible for the deployment and use of a highly customized four channel chemical ionization mass spectrometer aboard the C-130 aircraft.
  • Lead the scientific analysis of this unique CIMS dataset post-campaign.
  • The position will require a minimum of 6 weeks in the field during July/August 2023.

  • The NSF GOTHAAM study will assess air quality, chemistry, and pollutants in the skies above greater New York City in the summer 2023 using NSF’s C-130 Research Aircraft, GOTHAAM is a unique opportunity to study oxidative and multiphase chemistry of gases and aerosols its impact on air quality on one of the most densely populated regions of the country.
  • The position will start in September 2022.

What We Can Offer

The salary for this full-time position is $65,000 - $70,000 per year depending upon experience.

What We Require

  • A Ph.D. in chemistry, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Excellent skills in the operation and maintenance of advanced instrumentation, ideally acquired by involvement in instrument design and construction are essential.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Skills in the operation and data interpretation for advanced chemical instrumentation, ideally CIMS, are important.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry, vacuum technology, chemical instrumentation, as well as computer programming and/or complex data analysis (especially Igor Pro) are highly desirable.
  • Experience with laboratory or field studies of atmospheric chemistry is also desirable.
  • Independence, drive, and collaboration are important and will be encouraged to develop the candidate’s career.
