Job Summary

CU Boulder Libraries encourages applications for the Google Books and Preservation Technician position! This role is part of the Collection Management Team at CU Boulder Libraries and collaborates with both the Collection Couriers and Caretakers, and the Preservation and Collection Care Sections. This position is responsible for pulling, processing, and preserving library materials being sent to Google or PASCAL, our offsite storage facility on the Anschutz Campus in Denver. In this role, you may track down missing materials (e.g., books, maps, and government documents) and pick up or deliver material to various library locations to meet fulfillment and delivery requirements. You will also play an integral role in the Google Books Project by assessing the condition of items and preparing shipments to be sent to Google for scanning. This position also supports the Preservation section by preparing Rare and Distinctive (RaD) Collections for transfer to PASCAL. This position performs basic preservation treatments and condition evaluations and verifies that materials being shipped from the Libraries are pulled and processed accurately.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Google Books Project Member & Materials Management
  • Pull books from Norlin Library, branch libraries and PASCAL offsite storage facility to ship to Google, PASCAL, or between library locations (pulling these materials might involve being certified on and operating a forklift at PASCAL). 
  • Search for missing materials and pickup or deliver materials to various library locations in order to meet fulfillment and delivery requirements.
  • Review books pulled from the Libraries and PASCAL for preservation issues (prior to shipment to Google or PASCAL). 
  • Return materials to library shelves or PASCAL shelves once returned.
Prepare Rare and Distinctive (RaD) collections for transfer to PASCAL offsite storage 
  • Assess the condition of items and determine appropriate enclosure and housing needs.
  • Work with Collection Couriers and Caretakers Section Lead to schedule pick up of items prepared for transfer.
Preservation and Collection Care
  • Work with Preservation Section Lead and Conservator on enclosure needs for items in all collections.
  • Process and order Custom Boxes from commercial vendor.
  • Coordinate shelf preparation process.
  • Other Preservation Duties as assigned.
Rescued Book Process
  • Preliminary assessment of circulating materials to determine appropriate level of treatment.
  • Conduct a triage to direct books to the appropriate unit for repair, rebinding, or for additional research.
  • Consult Section Lead as Conservator as needed for triage decisions.
  • Conduct the basic research necessary to make treatment decisions for material that cannot (or should not) be repaired or rebound, such as brittle books.

The responsibilities of this position will require an on-campus presence.

What We Can Offer

Annual base salary range for this position is $34,000 to $36,000.

What We Require

  • Colorado residency.
  • Current, valid driver’s license.
  • One year of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. 
    • Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. 
  • Ability to push approximately 600 lbs. on specialized carts, working with a colleague.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience with Sierra, or similar library systems. 
  • Experience locating, shelving, or retrieving library materials shelved in LC classification. 
  • Understanding and knowledge of preservation standard methodologies.
  • Experience with condition assessments or basic preservation treatments.
