Job Summary

The College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Dean's Office encourages applications for an HR Generalist! The HR Team provides operational support and guidance to all CEAS departments and programs and is responsible for ensuring the overall operational effectiveness and efficiency of the college’s HR processes. The College of Engineering and Applied Science comprises more than 20 departments, programs, and centers: approximately 375 faculty, and 300 non-faculty employees and growing.

The HR Generalist is a key contributor for the college’s many programs, working directly to support a portfolio containing programs, centers, and partnerships. This role serves as a strategic business partner providing guidance, advice, training, and direct assistance to the Program Directors and HR liaisons, with regard to recruitment, hiring, on-boarding, reappointment, training, leave management, separations, retirements, and performance management, for all employee groups. The HR Generalist also works to maintain compliance with college, university and state policies and procedures throughout the college in collaboration with the Human Resources Manager, HR Coordinators, and fellow HR Generalists.

The Human Resources Generalist will also collaborate on developing opportunities within the college to allow for cross-training and sharing of efficient and compliant practices with HR peers. This role will work to better the CEAS HR office process and policies for Dean’s office as well as throughout the college. This position will also be involved in the planning and execution of multiple employee engagement events throughout the year. This position formally reports to the Human Resources Manager in the Dean’s Administrative organization.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

CEAS Program and Department HR Support

  • Supports all HR functions within a portfolio of CEAS programs and provides guidance on effective practices.
  • Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) on all college and university HR policies and practices.
  • Meets regularly with Program Directors and HR liaisons to ensure program goals are achieved.
  • Attends program staff meetings as needed to be aware of upcoming HR action items and deliverables.
  • Communicates and/or implements any HR updates and information coming from CEAS or Campus HR to programs and departments as needed.
  • Works in collaboration with program and department leadership and HR liaisons to improve and align program-wide process and/or policies.
  • Coordinates with programs and departments to conduct exit interviews and processes resignations.
  • With the support of the HR Manager, assists in the resolution of Employee Relations issues that arise in programs within their portfolio.

Recruitment, Hiring, and Onboarding

  • Guides and coordinates recruitment and hiring processes for research faculty, staff, student, and temp staff appointments. Assist with the creation and approval process for position descriptions.
  • Assists with the preliminary and final compensation analysis for all staff positions.
  • Coordinates with Talent Acquisition on the offer letter creation and approval process.
  • Ensures appropriate speedtypes and rosters are applied to searches and approvals have been received via the budget augmentation process.
  • Verifies that signed offer letters are completed and housed in personnel files, and that all steps in the campus hiring process are completed including background checks and I-9 requirements.
  • Collaborates with the hiring manager on all onboarding for new hires.
  • Sends CEAS HR Welcome emails to new hires.
  • Collaborates with the CEAS Finance Team to ensure all new hires, appointment adjustments, and end of appointments are entered into HCM and correctly compensated.
  • Coordinates Temp Staff hiring with HR Coordinators to make sure programs and temp employees have the information and support needed.
  • Collaborates with members of the CEAS Faculty Advancement team to support faculty searches, appointments, and assessments as needed.
  • Manage student hourly hiring for programs, coordinating with program HRL and CEAS Finance on all steps to complete the process during each semester.
  • Manage the semesterly Graduate Research/Teaching Appointment process for programs, coordinating with program HRL and CEAS Finance on all steps to complete the process during each semester.

Leave and Benefits

  • Serve as the SME to employees and supervisors on the available leave programs in the CU system.
  • Coordinate with the CU Leave Team on leave requests within the college.
  • Provides guidance to supervisors who have employees using the various leave programs available in the CU system.
  • Ensures MyLeave timesheets are set up appropriately and submitted for all applicable employees in the programs in collaboration with the CEAS Finance Team.
  • Assess leave usage and ensures proper accounting and compliance (e.g., paid and unpaid leaves, faculty parental leave, etc.), working directly with Employee Relations, HR Service Center and the CU Leave Team.
  • Completes leave reconciliations/audits as necessary to ensure accurate leave accruals.
  • Works with supervisors, Employee Relations, and the CU Leave Team to support all leave requests for staff, faculty and research employees in the college and ensures that proper documentation is completed to meet federal regulations.

Performance Management

  • Collaborate with the fellow members of the CEAS HR team to facilitate the performance review and goal setting process for the college, ensuring that all staff, faculty, and researchers are reviewed on time, receive thoughtful evaluations, and are given effective feedback; coordinates and communicates annual timelines and processes.
  • Ensures that performance management plans are completed for all new employees by the required due dates.

Training and Communication

  • Acts as one of the primary points of contact and mentors for HR professionals throughout the college, offering guidance, training, and resources to foster HR Liaison professional growth and ensuring alignment with proven methods in HR.
  • Works alongside program leadership, identifies training needs and mapping out development plans for teams and individuals.
  • Works in conjunction with the HR Coordinators on developing HR content for the CU Engineering Weekly Digest and CEAS HR newsletter.
  • Communicates HR announcements to CEAS programs in a timely manner.
  • Provides updates and presentations during HRL meetings.
  • Collaborates on the crafting of college wide communication from the CEAS HR office.
  • Provide ongoing training on process and practices as they update and change.
  • Leads communication efforts with programs, HR Liaisons, and campus partners.

Recognition, Outreach & Events

  • Works collaboratively with programs to plan and celebrate employee years of service, awards and recognition, employee appreciation events, birthdays and celebrations.
  • Participates in college wide events such as Staff Appreciation Day, Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest, Chili Cook-off, etc.
  • Help facilitate New Employee Orientation Events several times each year.

Special Projects and Administrative

  • Performs a variety of related duties as assigned or necessary with independent judgment. This may include reviewing current HR processes across the program or college, working collaboratively to create consistent practices, or developing new approaches to address challenges.
  • Assists with keeping policies and procedures on the CEAS website updated.
  • Represents the college at various campus-wide and college meetings, as requested by the CEAS Sr. Director of Engineering Human Resources.
  • Collaborates with the HR Coordinators to maintain CEAS HR shared drives and files
  • Provides relocation assistance information for new employees and works to ensure a smooth transition to the area in coordination with each program.
  • Maintains all program records including but not limited to position descriptions, performance evaluations, retirements, resignations, etc.
  • Collaborates with all Campus HR centers to align college process with campus as much as possible.

  • This position offers a hybrid work modality with 2 days a week on-campus.

What We Can Offer

Starting salary range is $68,000 - $70,000. Relocation assistance is available within department guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a human resources, organizational resources, or experience with employment-related processes and procedures across full HR life-cycle.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Knowledge of employment-related concepts (compensation management, employee relations, EEO & Affirmative Action, organizational development, job evaluation, recruitment, etc.).
  • Background working in higher education including working knowledge of university administrative and fiscal policies and procedures and campus/university organizational structures.
  • Experience with employee relations.
  • Professional certification, including but not limited to PHR or SHRM-CP.
