Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Facilities Management department welcomes applications for an HVAC Technician. This position provides analysis, repair, maintenance and operational management of the HVAC and BAS systems within the Universities' academic buildings. We are looking for a journeyman who has experience and training in all aspects of HVACR system maintenance and operation.

Who We Are

Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for the overall physical development and maintenance of the campus. The mission of the department is to provide a safe physical environment that promotes the advancement and transfer of knowledge.  

This work unit is responsible for the installation, repair, maintenance, modification and operation of the Campus’ heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and building automation systems (BAS) in academic buildings. Most of the Campus’ building HVAC systems and/or components are controlled and monitored by the BAS. The BAS is a computerized network of direct digital controls (DDC) that monitors and operates the HVAC systems.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

HVAC System Analysis and Repair 
  • Perform journey level analysis and repair of HVAC Systems and associated equipment. This includes but is not limited to, air handling units (AHU), VAV systems, VAV with reheats, dual duct systems, constant volume with reheats, labs with variable fume hood control, constant and variable flow heating and chilled water systems, Delta P valves, steam systems, chillers, flat plate cooling, cooling towers, boilers (steam and hot water), and process cooling water systems. 
HVAC System Calibration and Commissioning 
  • Commission, calibrate, and test all temperature control components within a building’s temperature control system to maintain optimal system performance and energy savings.
  • This position may be required to function as the lead for Facilities Management when commissioning and calibrating new work installed by a contractor. 
Building Automation Systems/Direct Digital Controls 
  • Install, troubleshoot and repair all field devices of the direct digital control (DDC) systems within a building including microprocessor based controllers, wireless controllers, signal conditioners, relays, sensors, thermostats and all related wiring. 
  • Change numeric values, understand basic system programming code and alarm criteria and to maintain a clear understanding of the BAS within a building. 
Refrigeration/Chiller Maintenance and Operation 
  • Maintain, repair, and operate chillers, split systems, cold rooms, computer room air conditioners and other related components and systems. 
  • Responsible for recovery/reclamation of all refrigerants and oils per the EPA regulations and to file proper paper work for tracking of refrigerants. 
Project Support
  • Provide support for projects.
    • Projects may include: small remodel projects, renewal and replacement projects, large capital projects and other similar projects. 
  • Review project documents (drawings, specifications, component submittals and requests for information) reviewing outage notification requests, performing outages related to projects, performing quality assurance inspections, attending project walks, performing equipment start up and final commissioning of new project.

What You Should Know

  • Lifting requirements for this position are designated as “heavy.” The incumbent will be required to exert in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
  • Normal work hours are Monday through Friday. This position may be occasionally required to work alternative shifts, for example, 3:30 PM - 12 AM or 7:30 AM - 4 PM, Tuesday - Saturday.

What We Can Offer

Starting annual salary is $60,338, NON-NEGOTIABLE. Employee may be eligible for a 5% new hire salary increase within 12 months.

What We Require

  • Three years of experience in HVAC/mechanical trades work. SUBSTITUTION: Appropriate education or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Universal EPA Certification.
  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
  • Valid CO Driver's License.
  • To comply with ITAR regulations, must be either:
    • US Citizen (has a US passport, certificate of naturalization, original or certified copy of US birth certificate, Native American Tribal Document, Certification of Birth Abroad by Department of State).
    • Legal, permanent resident in the US (has a green card, or foreign passport has a temporary I-551 stamp imprinted on visa).

What You Will Need

  • Excellent customer service skills. 

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Knowledge of building automation systems and direct digital controls.
  • Knowledge of chiller systems over 250 tons.
