Job Summary

The Applied Mathematics Department at CU Boulder encourages applications for an IT Professional! This position will perform routine system administration. Responsibilities include: analyzing various faculty, staff, and student user needs and innovations in technology; assuring reliability of servers and network; monitoring and regulating the availability of shared files and hardware resources; and collaborating with outside systems administration/network consultant for continual testing and improvements that assure systems security and stability. The Department primarily uses Apple products in the environment. The candidate will be expected to schedule and perform software installations on workstations and laptops. The IT Professional will also determine that software versions are current and consistent, perform analysis of hardware resources, design and implement APPM website, and maintain and update web pages and web server.

The individual will work with little to no supervision and will need to be able to prioritize work for the department. The goal is to keep faculty, staff and students technically in working order so that there is little to no disruptions to the workflow.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

System Administration
  • Performs routine system administration on all departmental servers. Analyzes various user needs and innovations in technology. Department liaison with OIT for new systems implementation. Researches data storage initiatives and solutions. Installs and administers could based backup storage solutions for both server and workstations. Supports department specific software highly dependent on performance load and bandwidth required for computational mathematics.
  • Makes recommendations for APPM stems or network upgrades to the APPM Program Manager and Chair. Continually strives for systems improvements. Recommends purchase options for the department for various technologies. Tracks all APPM computer and other inventory.
  • Maintains and updates APPM’s Web Express website and subsites. Creates web pages for APPM student groups. Utilizes SEO to improve APPM web presence. Archives APPM events and exams. Works with staff, faculty, and students to implement new changes to the website. Attends training for Web Express to hone skills.
  • Designs and implements APPM website. Maintains and updates webpages, web server. Mentors work study student on updating web pages. Constant refining and redesigning of department website, ensuring current web protocols and professional best-practice recommendations are adhered to.
  • Proposes and recommends innovations to the website based on analysis of current systems and knowledge of state-of-the-art. 
Server and Network Systems Stability
  • Assures reliability of decentralized servers and networks. Monitors and regulates availability of shared files and hardware resources (printers, scanners, etc). Collaborates with outside systems administrations/network consultants for continual testing and improvements that assure systems security. Monitors system security to prevent damage from external attacks and user error.
  • Decides on optimal times for routine system backups and performs same, accommodating the needs of the faculty and staff and users. Stays abreast of the latest virus and other system attacks and recommends software and procedures to maintain system integrity. Management of research file systems following strict security protocols. Planning and implementation of file systems through the active directory organizational unit. Administration of general website hosting space and research data storage. Administration of enterprise server software: such as Apache web server. 
Software Installation and Version Control
  • Schedules and performs software installations on workstations and laptops. Assures that software use is legal and licenses are up-to-date. Qualified to install, configure, and support research-based mathematical software for quantitative analysis study. Maintains that software versions are current and consistent for faculty, staff, and students in a multi OS environment (Linux, Windows, Mac). Communicates and solicits feedback on plans prior to implementation. 
Workstation Support
  • Maintains and fixes APPM workstations and laptops. Supports and maintains a multi-user Linux Computer Lab running CentOS 7 with NFS and Active Directory. Verifies that all Help Room touch screen systems are working accurately. Verifies that all APPM lab computers are up-to-date with back-ups in place. Determines schedule for upgrading staff workstation systems and application software. Collaborates with OIT regarding security and network issues. 
High Performance Computing Management
  • Works with research computing to department to resolve user issues and help develop HPC projects.

What We Can Offer

The annual salary range is $62,000-$64,393.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • 1 year of experience in systems administration, desktop support, administering a website, experience in PC hardware maintenance and support.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to fix, diagnose and solve server and workstation hardware and software problems. 
  • Knowledge of software compliance, hardware pricing and purchasing. 
  • Competence working with web servers and websites. 
  • Experience/certification in systems administration and desktop support, ideally supporting a department or work group. 
  • Proficient in Mac, Linux, and Windows desktop operating systems and management. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Libreoffice applications including word processing, Power Point, and spread sheets. 
  • Solid experience in PC hardware maintenance and support. 
  • Experience working in a customer support (customer service) environment where work priorities may shift spontaneously. 
  • Sophisticated problem solving and the ability to adapt to changing organization needs. 
  • Solid understanding of networking concepts to facilitate DNS for dedicated IP’s in multiple campus locations. 
  • Linux server administration to facilitate backups, new users, and security protocols. 

What We Would Like You To Have

  • 3+ years of experience in systems administration. 
  • Experience working in higher education.
