Job Summary
Who We Are
International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) facilitates the entry, success, and retention of approximately 2200 international students and 800 international scholars. Our team advocates on behalf of international students and scholars (both within the university and to U.S. federal agencies) to ensure that they are afforded every opportunity to complete their educational, research, and/or professional objectives. We provide educational, social, and cultural programs that foster the integration and success of the international population on campus and in the local community. ISSS strives to promote a greater understanding and appreciation for all cultures.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Provide direct, comprehensive advising to international sponsored students regarding complex issues not only related to immigration but also related to academic, scholarship, logistical, financial, health, travel, and career development issues.
- Assist students and scholars in adjusting to life at the university and in the U.S. including advising on campus academic and personal support resources, clubs and organizations on campus, on and off campus employment, applications for Social Security Numbers, state driver’s licenses, etc.
- Research, interpret, and apply federal and institutional rules and policies to the specific situations of international students in F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant status.
- Serve as official liaison to federal government agencies as a Designated School Official (DSO), ensuring compliance with immigration regulations.
- May serve as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) if there are sponsored students in J-1 status.
- Authorize immigration benefits for sponsored students in the SEVIS federal database.
- Monitor, report, and submit required information and documentation to federal governmental agencies via SEVIS and ISSM and to sponsors as permitted under FERPA.
- Assist students in acquiring documents and/or information required by their sponsors.
- Work with Senior Assistant Director for International Sponsored Student Services to create and maintain database reports for sponsored students as well as process eform and DocuSign requests for sponsored students.
- Serve as the primary coordinator of programming and events for the international sponsored student population to cultivate an inclusive community for sponsored students and assist with their integration and success academically, socially, and culturally on campus and in the local community.
- Collaborate with other campus units, including but not limited to the Counseling and Psychiatric Services; Academic Advising, Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement; Career Services; and the Recreation Center in creating and implementing programming that will enhance the sponsored students’ experience on campus in regards to academics, career building, social integration, cultural adjustment, etc.
- Coordinate sponsor site visits to the university, including arranging appointments with academic advisors and other university officials. (Event planning includes budgeting and fiscal accountability; negotiating for time, space, resources, catering, etc.; and marketing to students, staff, and faculty.)
- Plan and implement special orientation sessions and processes for sponsored students in collaboration with New Student & Family Programs and other campus units.
- Lead and/or assist with international student orientation planning with committee, serve as mentor for student and/or scholar groups (such as but not limited to International Festival committee, CU International club, and International Peer Mentor program) and/or primary liaison for community organizations (such as Boulder Friends of International Students).
- Assist with projects within the ISSS office to enhance efficiency and ensure appropriate customer service, such as but not limited to website revisions, development of internal training materials, processes and communications such as handouts and forms, creating and giving presentations to campus community, social media updates, etc.
- Assist with front desk coverage as needed.
- Serve as member of internal ISSS committees and taskforces.
- Represent ISSS at events and assist with ISSS team commitments such as a mentorship for student clubs, liaising with community groups, leading programming initiatives, etc.
- Participate in weekly case management meetings, ISSS team meetings, new international student orientation, etc.
- Engage in professional development and compliance training opportunities.
- Train, mentor, assign work and supervise student worker(s)
- Other duties as assigned.
- Function as a back-up liaison contact on campus for the sponsoring agencies and companies.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with representatives from sponsoring agencies and companies.
- Acquire and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the sponsors' and their students' specific requirements.
- Provide requested documentation and information to sponsors as allowed under FERPA and other relevant laws.
- May participate in visits to sponsoring organizations, ensuring each major sponsor received regular visits.
- Advocate for students with sponsors and on campus as appropriate.
- Provide training and education to campus constituents on cultural differences as needed to support international sponsored students, facilitate campus integration, and ensure positive interactions. (Due to the substantial financial investment of the sponsors in their students, they have a high expectation in regard to both the achievement of the student and the support of the University. The advisor needs to be able to communicate and explain to the campus units this expectation and the corresponding cultural framework in order to develop best practices to support the sponsored students and the sponsors.)
- Develop and maintain relationships with various departmental and unit representatives on campus integral to the sponsored students’ success.
- Act as a liaison for sponsored students and sponsors to the Bursar’s Office, Office of the Registrar, and other units on campus as needed.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for non-profit programming organizations that administer sponsored student programs (such as the Fulbright Foreign Student Program) for the U.S. government. Examples of these programming organizations include but are not limited to the Institute of International Education, IREX, and AMIDEAST.
- Develop and maintain relationships with programming organizations.
- Document and implement internal protocol for processing and retention of documentation related to hosting sponsored students.
- Research and propose to ISSS leadership new hosting and partnership opportunities.
- Function as backup advisor for government sponsored scholars.
What You Should Know
- This is a 50% of full-time position or 20 hours per week.
- Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. lawful permanent resident.
- Hybrid work schedule with in-office attendance needed weekly. After training ability to work some hours remotely with most hours in office.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends may be required. Work schedule would be adjusted for the week to not exceed 20 hours/week.
What We Can Offer
- Three levels, salaries are listed at 50% of FTE:
- International Sponsored Student Assistant Advisor: $27,000 - $28,500;
- International Sponsored Student Advisor: $28,500 - $32,000;
- Senior International Sponsored Student Advisor: $32,000 - $35,000

Additional Preferences Depending on Level of Hire:
Work experience as an international student and/or scholar advisor (or similar position) atan institution of higher education or as an immigration paralegal or legal assistant. Theexperience must include assisting international students with F-1 visas. (Applicants withsimilar experience as a student employee in an International Student & Scholar Servicesoffice will be considered.)
- One (1) year of work experience as an international student and/or scholar advisor (or similar position) as a DSO and/or ARO at an institution of higher education.
