Job Summary

As a member of the Helpdesk Team within the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP), the IT Helpdesk position has the following purpose:
  • Provide support to laboratory staff, and other recognized users of the facility, in the use of supported software and hardware.  
  • Maintain accurate record of equipment allocated to staff and works with other LASP IT staff to ensure that the maintenance records are kept up-to-date. Coordinate annual deployment of PCs and laptops and handhelds (PDA & Smartphones) to laboratory staff. 
  • Maintain library of all implemented software and related licenses. Help maintain loan library of portable equipment and software for the use of laboratory staff, recommending replenishment and replacements as required. 
  • Provide immediate assistance, whenever possible, in resolving user problems. Coordinate prompt and efficient problem resolution, including some of the second line support functions within LASP IT as necessary. 
  • Escalate unresolved requests to the next level as required, ensuring that staff is informed, and advising the LASP IT Manager as required.
  • Perform basic account administration duties and keeps track of all user profiles in the Helpdesk ticket system. Prepare documentation on Helpdesk procedures and ensures that it is kept up-to-date. 
  • Ensure compliance with IT-related policies through the implementation of effective and efficient Helpdesk and/or IT procedures. 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Application of system techniques and procedures, including consulting with users, to determine hardware, software or system functional specifications
  • Provide direct support services to end users with technical problems or issues involving system performance, configuration, restoration, applications and software tools.
  • Design, development, documentation, analysis, creation, testing or modification of computer systems or programs, including prototypes, based on  and related to user or system design specifications.
  • Work with management and senior staff to assist in the development of operational procedures and use of information technologies.
  • Be a visible face for the LASP IT organization to help accomplish laboratory and IT goals.
  • Assist and mentor in the direction of student employees.
Design, testing, documentation, create or modification of computer programs related to machine operating systems
  • Deploy Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris software packages and operating systems.
  • Interact with our University and Laboratory personnel to coordinate system events with end users (e.g. audio visual, conference and other tasks).

What We Require

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in MIS, Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience in professional systems administration
Excellent and strong belief in customer service skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and varied user tools
Working knowledge and experience with desktop computer hardware with experience in ordering and configuration
Strong ability to handle multiple  and concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions while maintaining professionalism, accuracy, and efficiency in each task
Ability to lift 50 pounds

What We Would Like You To Have

Desired Qualifications:
  • Prior experience with Helpdesk position and responsibilities.
  • Any familiarity with PowerShell, sh/bash/tcsh. Python, and/or Perl.
  • LANDesk administration skills or experience is a plus.
  • In depth experience in administration of at least two of the following:
    • Microsoft Windows 
    • Mac OS X Sun Solaris 9 and 10
    • Linux
  • Experience in any automated software deployment methods.
