Job Summary

The Department of Biochemistry encourages applications for a Lab Manager to join our team in the Alexandra Whiteley Laboratory located in the new Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building on East Campus. 

Who We Are

Since 1986, Biochemistry at the University of Colorado at Boulder has offered a world-class interdisciplinary research environment in a beautiful mountain setting. Faculty includes a Nobel Laureate, five members of the National Academy of Sciences, three Howard Hughes Investigators, and many other esteemed scientists who have established themselves as research leaders within biochemistry. 

The Alexandra Whiteley Laboratory works on understanding how regulated protein degradation influences diseases such as cancer and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). To do this, the laboratory employs a variety of biochemical, cell biological, and in vivo techniques including Western blots and molecular biology, advanced flow cytometry, and animal models of disease. 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Responsibilities include ordering, shipping materials, animal colony maintenance, genotyping, maintaining lab inventory lists, autoclaving, equipment maintenance, updating the lab website, and general lab maintenance. During the remainder of the time, the candidate will have their own research project or help others in the lab on projects. Common methods in the lab include cloning new constructs, mammalian cell culture, transfection/transduction of constructs, flow cytometry, gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting, and in vivo animal models. 

What You Should Know

The start date should be no later than March 2020 and a two-year minimum commitment is required.

What We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in Biology or related discipline.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and some experience with mouse models. 

What You Will Need

  • Organizational skills and attention to detail in setting up the Whiteley lab environment.
  • Overall, enjoy a flexible, energetic, and sometimes independent work environment as tasks will change from day to day – from organizational, such as purchasing and lab setup, to practical, such as animal colony management, genotyping, and cell culture experiments. 

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience with cloning.
  • Previous experience with computer programs such as Quartzy, Excel, Word, and experimental programs such as FlowJo and A Plasmid Editor (ApE).
