Job Summary

The Department of Art and Art History invites applications for a Laboratory Coordinator II. This role manages daily operations of Interdisciplinary Media Arts Practices (IMAP) classrooms and labs for the disciplines of photography, video, digital art, and sound. In addition, this position manages the Print Lab, provides equipment, software and technical assistance for students, and orders all classroom and lab supplies and materials. The individual will also oversee all duties and responsibilities of the GPTI’s, GA’s and volunteers within the area. 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Print Lab Management
  • Creates and maintains a business strategy for the Print Lab, including budget management, advertising on and off campus, and the website.
  • Serves as main point of contact for patrons during open hours, including advising on file preparation for high-end, fine art printing. 
  • Calibrates displays and determines selection and maintenance of printers.
IMAP Labs and Darkrooms Management
  • Hires, trains, and supervises IMAP graduate and undergraduate students, including GPTI’s, GA’s, and student monitors.
  • Manages daily operations, including maintenance and organization of darkrooms, computers labs, and other specific needs related to photography, video, digital art and sound.
  • Advises and shares technical and artistic expertise on processes, equipment and software with faculty, staff and students using the digital output lab, digital lab, video lab, and darkrooms.
  • Keeps all cameras, SLR, digital, video and sound equipment in working order as well as all the computers and peripheral equipment, i.e. printers, scanners and copiers, software and hardware installation in the media output lab in working order for the students and faculty to use. 
  • Organizes, develops and monitors an equipment check out system for all students; manages scheduling of the photo lighting studio.
Acquisition, Repair and Inventory of Equipment and Supplies
  • Orders, organizes and inventories all items and supplies needed for all IMAP labs. 
  • Communicates with faculty, staff and students on a regular basis to determine their needs each semester.
  • Researches cost saving measures with vendors to provide software for labs, and other supplies.
Maintain Health and Safety of Classrooms and Studios
  • Organizes and oversees the environmental health and safety needs of the area and signs the weekly waste management sheets of EH&S.
  • Oversees the proper storage and removal of waste chemicals in the studios. 
  • Ensures that all IMAP lab users understand all procedures with regard to a safe working environment.

What We Require

  • Four years of lab experience with fine art photography and digital art, including printing. Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must be a current Colorado resident to apply.

What You Will Need

  • Working knowledge of the software used in all the IMAP labs, including Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Master's Degree in Fine Arts.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Darkroom experience.
