Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder is searching for a Clinical Laboratory Manager (CLM)! This role is responsible for daily laboratory operations, supervising laboratory personnel for accurate and timely clinical testing and reporting. The position ensures compliance with CLIA section 493.2, HIPAA, AAAHC, OSHA, FDA, and other state regulations, and assists with problem-solving in the clinical laboratory setting. Additionally, the role supports medical providers, supports college health related needs, and trains new employees for proficiency in lab duties. This role encompasses leadership, regulatory compliance, and mentorship for optimal clinical laboratory performance. The Laboratory Manager is accountable for site performance to include On Time Performance, Turnaround Time, and Quality metrics. Actively participate in the pre/post interpretation of complex technical duties in support of laboratory testing.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Lab Manager

Develop and implement new/current policies, procedures, or processes in the document control system. Ensure policies are reviewed at specific intervals, and are in compliance with regulatory requirements. Create reports to aid in the monitoring of laboratory activities.
Maintain the operations of laboratory information systems, update data tables in LIS Electronic Medical Record, ensure accurate and consistent flow of information and communication to the clinic.
Perform staff evaluations, interviews, and counsel’s laboratory personnel on a regular basis. Assist in hiring and training new personnel and competency assessment and development.
Accountable for supply management, monthly operating reviews, equipment maintenance/calibrations, and adherence to QMR standards and reporting.
Maintain all compliance documentation in accordance with regulating bodies (AAAHC, CLIA, FDA, OSHA, etc.) including cleaning logs, maintenance logs, IQ/OQ/PM’s etc. Consistently sustain updated documentation for inspection readiness.
Assist the Assistant Director of Support Services with the development and implementation of the annual budget for the laboratory. Introduce new tests, processes and instrumentation/equipment which may include recommendation, selection, evaluation, cost analysis, organizational change, and education.

Laboratory Supervision / Daily Operations

Supervise, design, assign or perform all aspects (pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical) of laboratory testing and procedures, quality control process, performance improvement activities, training of new employees, ongoing competency assessment of staff, advanced decision-making for customers and staff, departmental equipment operation, maintenance, and upgrades, writing/reviewing procedures and processes.
Evaluate the competency of all testing personnel and ensure staff maintain competency to perform test procedures while reporting test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently. The procedure for evaluation of staff competency includes direct observations of routine patient test performance, including patient preparation, if applicable, specimen handling, processing, and testing.
Resolve technical problems and ensure remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
Work alongside the billing department to resolve any issues pertaining to the lab, which may include insurance related concerns and ICD-10 codes. Reviews reference lab charges to ensure correct billing. Provide test name, mnemonic, charges, CPT code and suggested billing number for new tests to be added to the CDM.
Track and review all incident reports and issues related to compliance within the lab. Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with accrediting body and laboratory policy.
Ensure each employee has clear direction for daily/weekly/monthly duties and proper laboratory coverage in cadence with the university semesters. Accountable for resource management through myleave, approving PTO requests, timecards, and completing employee 1-on-1’s.
Oversee Point of Care Testing for the clinic. Maintain training documentation and ensure compliance.
If requested by the Assistant Director of Support Services, assist in the responsibilities of the Laboratory Director.

Medical Laboratory Scientist / Technical Duties

Posses the knowledge and analytic abilities to perform highly complex testing, interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instrumentation, and review testing performed.
Analyze and test blood, urine, and stool for chemical and pathological elements in the clinical areas of chemistry, special chemistry, toxicology, hematology, immunology, microbiology, parasitology, and urinalysis. Calculate test values. Calibrate instruments to maintain statistical precision and accuracy. 
Evaluate new and existing methods and interpret test results to ensure validity. Flag abnormal results for providers and document values appropriately. Interpret lab data for providers and recommend additional/alternative testing. 

What You Should Know

  • This is an in-person position with an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Friday, 8 am - 5 pm. This role is not expected to work University recognized holidays or evenings and will not be on call at any time.

The salary range for this position is $82,383 – $89,874 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution. 
  • Must meet CLIA and State regulations/ requirements to work as a Lab Manager in a High Complexity Laboratory. 
  • Must have ASCP MLS Certification or MT equivalent to apply. 
  • 5 years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • 3 years of relative laboratory supervisor experience. 
  • BLS Certificate upon hire (or obtained within 3 months of hire).

What You Will Need

  • Microsoft Office skills such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Possess visual acuity required to distinguish fine gradations of color and/or texture.
  • Knowledge of CAP, AAAHC, CLIA, FDA and OSHA regulations.
  • Extensive Laboratory Information System knowledge.
  • Extensive interface and auto verification skills.
  • Ability to implement problem solving skills.
  • Solid understanding of CLIA and relevant state regulations.
  • The ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to independently make decisions to support efficient, accurate and cost-effective clinical laboratory testing for the college health population.
