Job Summary

LASP is searching to hire an experienced and qualified Instrument Systems Engineer. The initial role includes leading and overseeing the systems engineering effort for an instrument development effort on a NASA interplanetary mission to Jupiter's moon Europa. The instrument determines the chemical composition of dust particles encountered at the moon, and is being designed, manufactured, and tested at LASP. Launch is planned in 2023.

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA.  We are the world’s only research institute to have sent instruments to all eight planets and Pluto.

LASP combines all aspects of space exploration through our expertise in science, engineering, mission operations, and scientific data analysis. As part of CU, LASP also works to educate and train the next generation of space scientists, engineers and mission operators by integrating undergraduate and graduate students into working teams. Our students take their unique experiences with them into government or industry, or remain in academia to continue the cycle of exploration.

LASP is an affiliate of CU Boulder AeroSpace Ventures, a collaboration among aerospace-related departments, institutes, centers, government labs, and industry partners.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Lead Instrument System Engineer
    • Requirements development and verification programs.
    • Contractual data deliverables.
    • Milestone reviews and associated peer reviews.
    • Instrument system design, development, assembly, integration, test, and instrument characterization.
    • Technical resource management (mass, power, data, pointing, etc.).
    • Specialty Engineering (contamination control, planetary protection, reliability analyses).
    • Support project management in the risk management process.
    • Process maintenance and participation (configuration control, anomaly management, system safety, etc.).
    • Support the development of mission design and instrument concept of operations.
  • Ensure science needs are reflected in the mission-level requirements and documentation.
  • Act at the point of contact for the payload systems engineering team at JPL.
  • Oversight of instrument systems engineering team.
  • Develop instrument integration and test (I&T) plans, help the PM to coordinate I&T activities, and provide System I&T support after instrument delivery to JPL.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager and Principle Investigator to make high-level technical decisions and to implement a successful science investigation.

What We Require

  • BS/BA engineering or applied sciences.
  • At least 10 years Systems Engineering experience on NASA science missions (other relevant technical experience on NASA missions may be considered).
  • Experience integrating and testing science instruments.
  • Experience with requirements management, interface control, and verification & validation (V&V).
  • Experience working in cleanroom environments with ESD sensitive hardware.
  • Experience with configuration management, anomaly management, risk management, and system safety.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Broad understanding of the measurement principles of space-based scientific instruments – specifically, mass spectrometers. 
  • Experience with environmental testing for spacecraft systems.
  • Advanced degree in engineering or applied sciences.
